Thoughts on the new kickoff rules

Mine so far:

Butker shorting kicks is like driving a Corvette on a gravel road

The NFL made something so simple-so confusing

Going into the season with the attitude of "We will just have to see what happens. There are scenarios we have not thought of yet" is the stupid thing I have heard in football. It would not be a good business plan, or educational plan. But but it seems that is how everything is approached today.

Roast away.

More return yardage & less injuries are the main goals. So far it seems to be working. I’m on the fence. Seems like letting Butker kick tb’s would be the best strategy for the Chiefs in most situations.

On NFL pre-game, Baldinger said he’s heard that teams want to try experimenting with this new kickoff in preseason but expects mostly touchbacks in the regular season

I don't get it, everyone is dissecting what Hardman did, but they're glossing over the fact that the ball didn't land in the landing zone. According to the rules, "Kick hits in end zone, stays inbounds - returned or downed – if downed then touchback to B30 yard line". To me, that means if the ball lands in the end zone you can return it, or down it for a touchback. It doesn't say anything about having to down it in the end zone.

Touchbacks are boring and a waste of time.

The NFL doesn't want injuries and CTE.

And they don't have the balls to just get rid of kickoffs if they are going to pretend they can create rules that give the kicking team an incentive to have a returnable ball and also the level of safety they appear to want.

Look, I'm fine with how kickoffs used to be, but touchbacks are rather pointless and if the NFL doesn't want the bodies flying down the field like you get in kickoffs, fine. I don't see it as sacred.

Just kill it. Don't create a complicated mess to officiate that doesn't really solve what I think they are trying to solve.

The refs were tanning their buttholes with Dave Toub on the beach in the offseason.

Meh. It's a new play, with a bunch of new rules. Was always going to take time for teams and refs to get their feet under them. We'll see what it looks like come Week 10 or so.

Glad not to see 8 touchbacks in a row though. So much better actually seeing returns regularly.

Toub's been one of the best STs coaches over the last two decades. Further, his unit has never let the team down when it mattered. In fact, in every playoffs run his unit has been not just a net positive, they've been a critical weapon the team needed to win a Ring.

I'm going to go waaaaaaay out on a limb here and guess that his unit is going to be just fine.

But I get that complaining about Toub/STs is a CP tradition, so have at it.

He is a primadonna who gets his picks as locks on his special teams. He has for years rested on his laurels. The young ST coaches except what they get at cutdowns and make it work on the field. Chicago dumped him at the right time. Andy needs a young and fresh mind in there and send the George Hamilton of the tanning bed packing.

This reminds me of the GDT during the first and second quarter of each game.

Yah, basically until the playoffs. Then when they pull off yet another great return that ends up winning the game, or some other critical play, they’ll be curiously quiet about Toub/our STs unit. Until next year. SSDD.
