R.I.P. Jim Kerney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that Chiefs legend and former safety Jim Kearney has passed away at the age of 81.

His family released a statement on Tuesday saying he “succumbed to several medical complications.”

Kearney played nine seasons with Kansas City beginning in 1967 and was part of the AFL Championship team and helped lead the Chiefs defense to a 23-7 victory in Super Bowl IV.

Kearney was also a member of the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

He played quarterback at Wharton High School in Texas and attended Prairie View A&M. He was drafted in 1965 by the Detroit Lions where he played for two seasons.

Kearney also taught science and coached football for many years at Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas.

“He was a person that loved his family, he loved playing golf, and loved his chiefs teammates,” the Kearney family said. “He served his community as a teacher, coach and mentor through his many youth sports programs. He is survived by his wife, sons and daughter. The entire Kearney family extends a hand of gratitude for all the love and support coming in from the entire KC Community. Thank you all and may God bless you and your families.”

Jim first appeared in a Chiefs uniform in 1967, and for the next eight years, he never missed a game. And yet, the most impressive parts of Jim’s life happened off the field,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement released Tuesday. “After his playing days, he became a high school teacher and coach. He mentored hundreds of children in the Kansas City area, and he will be remembered as a great player, a great teacher and a great man. My family and I send our deepest condolences to Shirley and the entire Kearney family.”

Ah, man. I'm sorry to hear this. RIP

I work with his son and he's a hell of a great guy. I imagine he inherited that from his dad.

He was the first Chiefs strong safety that I knew.

It's amazing to me how the game's finances have changed. Not many former players become high school teachers now.
