I for one will miss Gay. Watching a freak LB move like that is every bit as sexy as watching generational tight ends move like Kelce. When guys that big move like that its just beautiful.

He's a Defensive End playing linebacker. If he were a DE, you'd consider him well rounded, but he's not. He's a linebacker. He can't cover, he doesn't move well laterally, he doesn't get deep in his drops. He's a downhill player. He's Reggie Ragland with plus speed. He's a plus run defender who can be asked to slam into an OT and set an edge but isn't gonna throw up a swim/rip to generate a genuine pass rush. Gay was a much more rounded player than Chenal, IMO. Now that's not to say that Chenal, only 2 years in, can't improve. Perhaps he can. But the version of Chenal that we've seen through his 2 seasons in the league is anything but 'well rounded' - he's been a niche piece. |

That's kinda my worry with this LB group. Willie could really move and covered up alot of ground. They don't have that guy now.

The difference in Tranquil and Gay will be in the run game, IMO. On a stretch play, when Gay got to the ballcarrier, that dude stayed hit. Gay went through guys and stopped them in their tracks. Tranquil is more of a drag tackler and there are going to be some times with him in the Will where he gets to a guy and just gets shrugged off. Now he should be more reliable in coverage because he's a smarter player. But there were a few times last season where he just got beat to his spot. Because he's a good athlete, but he's not a great athlete and Willie Gay was. I think in Tranquil we'll have a more reliable but far less spectacular player. He'll be a valuable Will and backup Mike. And he'll be fine in that role. But he's not gonna be the guy that flys onto your screen and wrecks a play. |
