Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D....this fall on ABC
Josh Whedon is involved. I'm in!
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...-agents-520903 It's official: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on the air at ABC. The Joss Whedon drama based on the Marvel Comics property has landed a series order at the Disney-owned network, ABC announced Friday. The ABC Studios project is based on Marvel Comics' secret intelligence organization that has appeared in countless titles, including Iron Man, Captain America and The Ultimates, since being introduced in the 1960s. The military law-enforcement agency's moniker stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which also has evolved over time in the comics. Whedon is on board to co-pen the pilot alongside his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen; the trio previously teamed on the three-part web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Whedon directed the pilot, which has had ABC social media accounts for months. S.H.I.E.L.D. is executive produced by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb. ER's Ming-Na stars as Agent Melinda May, The Avengers' Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson, Killing Lincoln's Brett Dalton is set as gruff rising star Agent Grant Ward, Elizabeth Henstridge as science whiz Agent Gemma Simmons and Iain DeCaestecker as tech guru Agent Leo Fitz, with Nashville's Chloe Bennet set as Skye, a superhero-obsessed woman. Since the project was first announced in August, it has been a clear front-runner to land on ABC's 2013-14 schedule. ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee told reporters in January that the project was being fast-tracked and he was "very hopeful" that the entry with a "great script" would go "Marvel has the ability to bring the whole family around it," Lee said at the time. "Joss has great relationships around it. There's a lot of real funny male-female relationships and flirtations, but it's also Joss and Marvel, so there's a lot of action to it." "My boss Bob Iger buys Marvel, and how wonderful is it for ABC to be able to use the core talent from that and not use the Marvel brand but the Avengers franchise for a show that is not exactly about the Avengers but is attached to it?" Lee said, noting that Whedon was already working on scripts at the time. ABC will start a major marketing push for the high-profile project with a sizable built-in fan base Sunday, May 12, airing a first look at 8 p.m. ahead of the season finale of Once Upon a Time. |

Maybe they're trying to channel a more retro batman style to start. It's just to nice, it needs to shake people awake a bit. Plus the whole Coulson is a clone arc isn't going to surprise anyone when they're telegraphing it this badly.(lol I wonder if they'll change his name to 'Cloneson' after the reveal???) It's just got too much of a retro campy feel to me, it needs it's edge. |

Firefly was a mess at the time. I'm not sure if you watched it back in '03, but for the people who didn't the first episode to air was "The Train Job", not the pilot ("Serenity"). Because Fox didn't like the pilot. Which eventually ended up nominated for a Hugo award. And that was just the first scheduling screwup by Fox. They aired a bunch of the episodes out of order. Which made it difficult at times to follow what was going on (characters would sometimes allude to things the audience hadn't even seen yet...).

I just looked up the aired order and 3rd through 5th episodes aired were Our Mrs. Reynolds, Jaynetown, and Out of Gas, so yeah. I remember there were references you didn't get in those episodes, but nothing that prevented you from following what was happening. It didn't really get confusing until after Out of Gas, when they jumped back to show the episodes they skipped. |

My problem with this show is that most of the characters aren't very interesting. Coulson was a great supporting character in the movies, but they're overdoing him here - granted, they've toned it back a little since the first episode, where every line he had was a smartass quip, but he's coming across as really contrived. Fitz and Simmons are glorified props, the same quirky, childish, idiosyncratic tech support/comic relief characters that so many police procedurals (Criminal Minds, NCIS, Hawaii Five-O) seem to have these days. The main dude character is dull, and his actor isn't very good. Melinda May isn't doing anything. Sky(e?) is as good as it gets, and even she's too much on the cutesy side.
I do like the tone, the setting, the special effects, the action scenes, most of the dialogue, how it fits in with the Avengers world, and even the simplistic plots. They all more or less work for me. It's been picked up for a full 22; I predict major cameos and the giving-away of Coulson's 'secret' for November sweeps. |

The quality of this program is dropping from week to week. Even though ABC picked up the option for a full season, the numbers will drop if they don't increase the quality of the writing.

The VFX in this week's episode where laughable, IMO, as was the acting. It's so rote. |

This show will make through season 1. They'll add Summer Glau to the cast in Season 2 and then the show is doomed. The only exception would be if she was Chloe Bennet's love interest.
