Not really.

He was super-serious and legit, but with the advent of Morton Downey and Geraldo, his ratings started to drop, and he ended up having to pivot to try to get the ratings back.

That’s correct. He would have on scientist guys like Linus Paulson who talked about the real danger to the foodstuffs due to the radiation bomb from Chernobyl.

Heh. When I was little and home from school sick, I used to stay at my Grandmother's house (while my Mom was at work) that was right across the street from where we lived. My Grandma would fix me peanut butter toast and hot tea while we watched Donahue

I vividly recall my mother being glued to his show when he had a renowned atheist on the show. I can’t recall her name, but do recall my mother being totally horrified.

I've been watching those reruns recently, and Colonel Hogan was getting a little too confident in later episodes of the show. He was almost daring the Germans to catch him.
