Need a new Cell Phone
I will preface, I am a Cave Man trying to join the civilized world.
Why have a cell phone (jest). I am at the office, you have my phone number, at home call me. If on the golf course, I don't want to talk to you. "Leave a message and maybe I'll call". Truth though, they can be a leash but necessary. In Europe, they called a "Handy", which they are. A computer in your pocket. But I have a computer in my office and at home. The best reason to have one is for travel. Heck I even have a laptop (some where). That all said. I want a small phone. I don't watch movies etc. So I don't need a large screen. Pixels for the camera? Not a biggie. Thus looking for a smart flip phone. Currently I am using a Android Verizon Tracphone. I get great cell service. No contracts/plans. I don't use much talk time, texting nor data. If I do need more time, buy more. If I find I do need much more, then I will sign up with the kids service (of course they have unlimited). For the past few years through Tracphone, I buy a card for $100/year and get double/triple minutes. It has been all I need. I am working to cure that. But $100/yr vs $600-$1000 for contracts seems right for me. So, at this point, I want to maintain flexibility. Issues of importance that I understand are: size of internal memory (32G), voice keyboard. I think using the GSM vs CDMA could be an issue as well. I do travel a bit to Germany so thinking GSM would be better. Don't know. GSM is offered by ATT and T-Mobile. CDMA is Verizon. My son switched to T-Mobile and it sucked in NE Ks. I understand that ATT and Verizon work well. Not T-Mobile. I believe I should get an Unlocked GSM phone. Then chip it for Tracphone/ATT. Which Smart Flip Phone with decent internal memory, voice keyboard, GSM?(ATT), at a reasonble cost? I don't need a $600 phone. I read Samsung and Motorola should be looked at. Thoughts and/or questions would be greatly appreciated. Last edited by Holladay; 10-23-2018 at 06:26 PM.. |

Smart flip phone?
I don't...What? Probably the best thing for you is to buy the oldest iPhone you can get. It is the most intuitive. It will also browse CP. |

You gotta be kidding me. Browse CP? You might do that in your combine, I fly a desk that has a computer built into the cockpit.
Point taken though. I lack all intuition, thus me thinks mute. Also, aren't iPhone big honkers? I want small and effective. Yes, I understand there are now smart flip phones. I have come to the realization that a dumb person needs a smart phone. Why, I have no earthly idea. BTW, how is the harvesting coming. Here in Brown County, yields way down. |

I have the iPhone SE. Got it for the size (it's really small) as I don't care about anything other than call, text, camera, facebook, Goolemaps. Basic stuff.
The SE is perfect for me. It's pretty cheap now too. |

If you are willing to switch to MetroPCS, they will basically give you an iphone se for switching, plus free Amazon prime and your bill will be like 40 bucks for unlimited everything. I have three phones through them all unlimited for 78$ a month total. The iphone se is a phenomenal little machine that is very user friendly.

Seems like a jitterbug phone might be right up your alley.

MetroPCS is T-Mobile. I just now checked T-Mobile coverage area again, seems way to spotty. Quote:

I was always a not an iPhone guy. Then I got this and couldn't be happier. It's a solid phone without any issues. At all. And it rugged. Nice design. Looks best in gray like bigjosh and me.
I am upgrading to an 8+ when Straight Talk gets them in again. Company is paying for it now. Last edited by eDave; 10-24-2018 at 01:04 AM.. |

I've had no issues with them. I have unlimited talk/text, 2GB data/mo, and insurance for $52.85. No contract. Just set up auto refill and forget it. When I get the 8+, my bill will still be under $80. Staying with Verizon or ATT is just dumb. Edit: Looks like MetroPCS has better plans. May switch over to that. If you choose a passthrough provider like Straight Talk or Metro, make sure you understand who they are using for actual service. Depending on where you are, T-Mobile or AT&T might be awful or they might be great. Verizon is pretty solid everywhere but they're also the Cadillac and pricing reflects that.
