I'm actually very surprised at the success of this. I saw a preview back when we went to see the Mario movie and I kind of chuckled and thought it looked close to the most reeruned shit I'd ever seen (but 12 year old girls would like it, of course).

I think the difference in run time and the tone between Barbie and Oppenheimer makes a big difference. Even if they are both well made movies.
It's a heck of a lot easier to commit to <2 hours of a 'feel good' upbeat movie than 3 hours of 'contemplating the end of human existence" |

They did a great job with the marketing. I read that they actually spent more on marketing than they did the film itself.
People are having fun with it, dressing up in Barbie and Ken outfits going to the movies. |

Not surprising. Adults dont like real adult movies anymore. 40 year olds still watching comic book movies and playing video games. These are the cinematic blockbusters in todays world.

The marketing for the film was excellent.
It sold the concept well. |

As I said in another thread, this movie might have had a lot of feminist bullshit, but it had Margot Robbie, and it didn't feel like a movie that was telling their should be target audience to **** off. I haven't actually watched the movie, but this is what I've gathered from people who did.
A feminist Barbie works. If Disney did Barbie, they'd make Barbie black and/or trans at the rate they're going at. Turns out this stuff isn't as black and white as either side thinks. |
