Brilliant! I would watch every game. 2 12.50%
Pretty good idea. May have to tweak the guidelines a little. 3 18.75%
Makes me no difference. I'm watching regardless. 3 18.75%
Not a good idea. It might take away from the athleticism and big plays. 2 12.50%
Bad idea. This is what I had to do in grade school, and it stank. 5 31.25%
I'd need to see it in some preseason games before I could vote. 1 6.25%

Football on natural terrain

The Vikings snow shoveling thread got me thinking.

Why do teams have to play football on a flat and grassy field? Football should be played on natural terrain, and the home team gets to pick the location.

Think about how cool that would be. One week you might be playing in a forest where players have to dodge trees every five feet, and the next week there might be a creek running down the middle of the field. Maybe you've got hills where a safety can ambush an unsuspecting wide receiver, or maybe it's played on the side of a steep hill where the advantage goes to the team with the best calves.

You'd probably have to have a few rules for player safety, such as no cliffs over four feet high and no water more than five feet deep, but other than that it's any area that's 100 yards long and 53 yards wide (or whatever it is). I think an innovation like this could really bring a new energy back to the game of football.

Thoughts?

Nice! Talk about a home field advantage. I'd love to obliterate someone with an assist from a tree. I just wouldn't want to be on the other end of that hit.

I don't think it would still qualify as 'football'.

Still, you might be on to a whole new entertainment idea. There could be some wild carnivores in the woods, and crocs in the water. No referees. I can't believe the Romans didn't think of this.

And perhaps no other rules. After sixty minutes, the team that wins is the team whose goal line is furthest from the football.

Under the rules, I would see no reason that animals couldn't be on the field. By definition, animals are a part of "natural terrain".
