A daunting list of free agents, go beach go!

Please delete

free agents (RFAs)
These players have accumulated three accrued seasons in the league. While these players can negotiate and sign with any team, the Chiefs team can offer them a contract tender that comes with the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation should they sign elsewhere.

T Prince Tega Wanogho
TE Jody Fortson

Unrestricted free agents (UFAs)
These players have four or more accrued NFL seasons. All are free to negotiate and sign with any team. Some will be re-signed to new Chiefs contracts. Others will be allowed to seek better deals with other teams — and if history is any guide, some of them will later be re-signed if they are unable to find work elsewhere. And some will never again wear a Kansas City uniform.

Why is it daunting? Aren't most teams dealing with a list that long or longer? Considering the cap space they're working with, and the fact that only a couple of these are star players, I don't think it's a bad position to be in. Many of these guys I'm completely indifferent about.

I'm wondering if they're going to re-sign Donovan Smith, and if not, what's the plan for LT?

I hope all these guys realize they could sign for a little less with us, but still make more with their earnings from playing more games than other teams in the postseason.

I find Donovan Smith to be one of the most intriguing cases to watch. With a lot of these guys, we can easily figure out where they stand in terms of contract amounts, but Smith could go in any direction.

He plays a high-value position, and played really well this year. However, we got him really cheap because he played really poorly last year with Tampa. Is someone going to see the resurgence and sign him for a fortune? Will we give him a massive raise? Or is he in that phase of his career where he's not going to get a big contract offer and we'll sign him yearly for a bargain amount?

This is easy:

G Nick Allegretti - Keep but only at the right price
T Donovan Smith - Draft/Cheap FA (see below)
RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Replace thru Draft
RB Jerick McKinnon - Replace thru Cheap FA
TE Blake Bell - Draft
WR Mecole Hardman - I would keep as a Cheap FA and let him be returner/burner
WR Richie James - Gone
QB Blaine Gabbert - Cheap FA
DT Tershawn Wharton - Keep him or Nnadi on a friendly deal and Draft replacement
DT Chris Jones - 5 Year/$170M but really 3-year $90M w/$50M signing and $17M cap in Y1
DT Derrick Nnadi - Keep him or Wharton on a friendly deal and Draft replacement
DE Michael Danna - Replaced by FAU (unfortunately, I like Danna)
LB Willie Gay Jr. - Keep him or Tanquill for $7M/year and draft replacement for whoever goes
LB Darius Harris - Draft replacement
LB Drue Tranquill - Keep him or Gay, Jr for $7M/year and draft replacement for whoever goes
CB L’Jarius Sneed - 5 Year/$125M but really 3 year $65M with cap hits of $15M in Y1
S Deon Bush - Reaplce with cheap FA/Draft
S Mike Edwards - Replace with cheap FA
P Tommy Townsend - Would prefer to resign but only at right price
LS James Winchester - Would prefer to resign but can replace with cheap FA

Would need about $75M in cap space to do that, which includes the additional $5-10M for a new LT and another $5-$10M (plus cutting MVS) to get a true #1 at WR.

If they go cheap I could see them with a rookie at LT, Jones, Nnadi, Tranquill, and Gay go which would bring the amount of cap space needed down to around $30M.

The variance in opinion about our tackles is crazy. Some people think they're horrible and some think they're great. I thought Smith was kind of mediocre this year overall.

Not really? An excellent couple years of drafting have made most of these guys more or less expendable. The only hard decisions are how much Veach wants to offer Jones and Sneed before he tops out and pivots elsewhere.
