I might offer some advice for the future.
If you go out to your rental car and it has Illinois plates, just go back in and demand a different car, like I did when I found a Daewoo in the spot that my rental car was supposed to be parked in at the Boston airport.
Maine and Vermont are two of our most beautiful states IMO, but I didn't get a ticket in either of them.
