If there's one thing that the vast majority of people have in common (other than being bumbling fools), then it's that most people have some kind of pattern with their relationships...two biggest patterns are: a) the type of person, and b) how the relationship is handled. Find out these things, but don't let the girls or their ex's figure out what you're doing...and for the love of god, don't let their ex's know that you might be the new guy cause there's always that one (aw hell, it could be quite a few if that's one of the girls' types) that feels he still has to be overprotective.
