There is some stupid rule that any new Star Trek stuff has to deviate from the original by a certain amount. Apparently(?) that's why the newer movies did an alternative timeline. You know what would be a great way to get around that rule? Just make Discovery about Pike's Enterprise instead. Use the gay black doctor and the grumpy lesbian. It'd be great.
