It doesn't eat up anything more than the $1.5 million in accelerated signing bonus that they'd end up eating next year anyway. The 'dead money' is already factored into the cap as salary. Cutting a guaranteed salary doesn't make it double count - it's still only in there once.
They can absolutely cut him, I just don't think they will because they don't have any gain in doing it at all. They can just PUP or IR him and maybe bring him back later. Or just leave him at home.
At least at that point they wouldn't take the PR hit of cutting a fan favorite or have to deal with a pissed off locker room.
