I've had it. Not enough to need surgery but enough to be a nuisance. Fought it for literally years and yeah, it's a pain in the ass when it's aggravated. For me it was just sharp little needles right in that joint between my foot and big toe and when you really had it inflamed, it hurt to even roll your foot to walk.

If he needed to get cut on, its fair to say it was a hell of a lot more painful than anything I was dealing with while playing ultimate frisbee or softball...
