There’s another option for Kansas City: wait, and move him in 2022. Of the two options, this is probably the more likely one. The roster bonus would transfer to another team, fully guaranteeing that money for one year. So, when a team would trade for Jones, that would be their year-one salary, with the Chiefs again having no dead money. For another team then, they could look at Jones, see the 20 million dollar base salary in 2023, convert that completely into a signing bonus for an extension, only have to pay him for one immediate year, then get more salary cap flexibility in the next extension. That would allow a team to easily restructure or extend Jones, easily opening salary cap space that year. The last year of Jones’s deal has zero guarantees, so even if you traded for him, you could cut him a year later, no questions asked.
