If the movie assumes that Billy the Kid is around the same age as Estevez is now, it would be set around 1918. The BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) was introduced in 1918, and the Thompson submachinegun was introduced in 1920. Realistically I doubt if some two bit outlaw hiding out in the bumble**** desert would have access to or the means to purchase either, but of course I doubt if realism is the name of the game here.
At the very least he could be carrying a 1911 pistol.
