On the flipside, in 2017 the 80-82 Royals, Rays and Angels would have made the playoffs. That's three teams with losing records in the playoffs. If you just look through the standings pretty much every year this change would put teams with losing records in.

I quickly looked at the last 10 seasons and I think there was one season when no sub-.500 would have made it. Several years had more than one sub-.500 team.
2017 had 4 teams--Royals, Rays, and Angels as you mentioned, plus the Marlins with 77 wiins.
The worst was a 76-win Padres team in 2013.
