It still all starts with stopping the run. Rex Ryan has been damn good with the Ravens and the Jets. He started a transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4, which is why he ultimately failed. Allegedly, he's gotten offers to get back into it but has turned them down. Maybe he needed a break? If he didn't, it has nothing to do with his ability to coach a defense.
Rex Ryan would coach circles around Spags. Plus, with Ryan, this defense doesn't have to overhaul its front 7. Spags, the Chiefs might take another 2 seasons for this defense to get respectable if he doesn't fail.
On a side note, I had no idea Bill Snyder hired him in 1999. He only stayed for a month before jumping to the Ravens.
