I think the obvious criticism for the average person watching (as in they went out of their way to do so) was the pacing suggested Kurtzman was snorting Adderall when shooting and then made the editing staff bang an 8-ball in production. It may just may be my setup with the ****ed up audio, but reddit seems to suggest people had a hard time making dialogue out like I did through both the fast-pacing and sound mixing.
The great: Captain Pike as portrayed by Anson Mount. Seems like they Yahtzee'd the casting here.
The good (even if it's a bit meta): going out of their way to tell the audience who the **** the bridge crew are through Pike's roll call; bridge crew getting some personification (namely the CONN and OPS gals); decent hand-holding to introduce the season's thematic conflicts (the anomalies and Michael-Spock sibiling split); C-plot side story stuck to being "Trek" in introducing some science; Tig Notaro's character (even though it was a bit Mary Sue)
The meh: how they handled Stammets mourning Hugh's death scene; Tilly being over-the-top Science! girl yet again; the obvious introduction of a character just to (pun VERY MUCH intended) red shirt him;
how
they set up the Michael-Spock drama plotline; dialogue bukkake about how nifty the
Enterprise
is by the entirety of the bridge crew; some 4th wall shattering lines from Saru and others.
The "man, it sure would be nice if this didn't follow
The Last Jedi
and debut days after the Gillette ad": some of the dialogue between Michael and Tilly in Sickbay; the last lines of the obvious redshirt character
Overall: a soft 7/10 episode.
