If it is 4th and 10 and you throw a pick thirty yards downfield, you actually helped your field position. It's part of the reason why the metrics say never punt, just always go for it.

Those interceptions can be returned for scores. The offense is not designed to stop a DB with the ball. Atleast a punt return unit is built with the intention of stopping speedy ballcarriers
