It didn't sit right with him either obviously for all the reason's you just stated (against Jedi ideals, not who he is... etc.). Which is why he didn't do it.
Now for the hypothetical debate... should he have? Not unlike the debate, "If you had a chance to go back and kill Hilter as a child, would you?"
