Because it was the Marlins and Cardinals that wanted the meeting, not Stanton. For a meeting to even happen there has to be some sort of agreement between the teams on the terms of a trade deal, or movement towards a deal. I'm sure the meeting had more to do with the Cardinals wanting to know if they even had a shot of him waiving his NTC for St. Louis.
But, Stanton wants to play in LA and the Dodgers havent completely shut the door on trading for him, though they havent exactly made it a priority either. There isn't a team in the league that wouldnt want Stanton in their lineup and with his NTC he can afford to just sit back and force the Marlins to trade him exactly where he wants to go, even if it means they get 3rd tier return.
