Paylor mentions the energy sucking loss of Spenecer Ware. I don't think this can be stated enough. NFL players are on record that they hate pre-season games. KC sees a starter and by all accounts, a well liked player, go down with what at the times looks like a devastating knee injury. I wouldn't be surprised at all if many players, especially starters or locks to make the team, mentally shut it down at that point and focused mostly on avoiding injury.
