Her account is pretty damning, to say the least. Sure, there's probably some embellishment, i.e. A minute choke hold, etc. but if she has marks on her throat or he really did choke her for even 10 seconds, it's pretty disturbing. So unless the embellishments are grossly over exaggerating in pursuit of a payday they matter.
It's just football though, and I don't watch it for character references or influences. He's literally on probation for the crime, legally and also figuratively for the team and fanbase, IMO. One misstep and he's gone.....
