Look dude, I'm directly involved with 12 related party business arrangements and have a cursory understanding of several others. Unequivocally the answer is ALWAYS honesty and a clear understanding of the circumstances. Always.

Business and family are two very different animals. The situations aren't terribly analogous and really shouldn't be. Honesty in a business relationship is almost universally the best bet. Honesty between friends and family? Well sometimes it's best to spare someone's feelings. Like I said, nobody likes to admit it in practice, but nobody likes the asshole that never does it in reality.
