Ruthless People and other great comedies
I just rewatched Ruthless People after 10-15 years and couldn't stop laughing. Bette Midler is an underrated actress/comedian and Danny DeVito is always a riot. If you pay enough attention, you will see "Frankie Carbone" of the movie Goodfellas in a scene.
Highly recommend. Down and Out in Beverly Hills is also great. (Just rewatched as well) What About Bob? There are others I'm going through from the 80's early 90s. Any recommendations? :hmmm: |
Great movie. My favorite scene/line:

I'm trying to think of something really under the radar.
I assume most people know Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. Maybe Three O'Clock High? |
Micheal Keaton had a lot of great comedies in the 80s:
Night Shift Mr. Mom Johnny Dangerously Gung Ho Beetlejuice |
Noises Off is about as hard as I laughed at a movie.
It takes a bit to set up the payoff, but when it's in full swing of the hijinks, it just comes at you in waves. Hardest I laughed at the theatre was probably Something About Mary. |

My sister and I thought that was the funniest movie ever made when we saw it in the theater as little kids. Revisited it in college and there were amusing parts. But it was a little hokey, certainly not an all-time classic. |
Ruthless People and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are probably my two favorite comedies.

Drop Dead Fred is a good comedy.

Spaceballs, Uncle Buck, Coming to America, Ace Ventura,National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Robin Hood men in tights, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead, Look Who's Talking, Mrs Doubtfire.

The Jerk
See No Evil, Hear No Evil Strange Brew EDIT: Strange Brew was the hardest I laughed as a kid. Loved, loved, loved that movie. |
Another one of my favorite Steve Martin movies is The Man With Two Brains.

One of the funniest scenes of ANY movie that I ALWAYS remember is when Michael Keaten gets off the subway in New York and runs up to the window and shouts at Henry Winkler through the window: "LOVE BROKER" ROFLROFLROFLROFL https://netflixadayforayear.files.wo...t-shift-07.jpg |

Two movies before this era that were pretty damn good were Kentucky Fried Movie and Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.
The scene where Woody Allen is trying to break open the chastity belt of Lynn Redgrave is hysterical. Also the scene were Burt Reynolds and Tony Randall are in the brain of a man as he is trying to get an erection for sex might be one of the greatest ever! |
Just thought of another under the radar:
Fandango |

Spent many nights at the drive in watching The Groove Tube and Kentucky Fried Movie, always a double feature. Roll all the windows up, fire up an oversized joint and laugh our asses off all night long.
"Young lady, are you aware of the penal codes in this state?" 'Big Jim Slade" A Fistfull of Yin ROFL Feel Around ROFL And all of the coming attraction spoofs. |

Another great dark comedy that is hard to find is Divorcing Jack. If you can find it, it's well worth.
Death Becomes Her with Bruce Willis, Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep was underrated IMHO. |

I always got a kick out fo Crazy People and the ads they came up with. I worked for one of the companies in the 90's that was used for some of the faux ads so I got particularly tickled with those.

|
I forgot about Fandango. That’s one I used to always watch when it would come on HBO.
Forgot about Noises Off too. Both good. Death Becomes her is really underrated. Especially Bruce Willis in this movie. Plays the perfect beta. |
Another 80s one people may have forgotten:
Lost in America |
The Princess Bride
|
Another comedy in the spirit of Ruthless People is The Ref. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis play a bickering married couple held hostage by Denis Leary. If you like your comedy with a nasty edge to it, this movie is for you.
|
Another great one I forgot is Dutch starring Ed O'Neill aka Al Bundy and JoBeth Williams
Laughed my balls off on that one! |
Oh shit...Dutch. Yeah, that’s a good one too.
|
I’ll defend ‘Ishtar’ until my death.
I think it’s got some truly great bits in it. The Hoffman/Beatty role reversal is solid. I’ve always liked it and think it got unfairly judged because of its budget. |

My best friend, who has a PhD in physics, has often commented that Real Genius very much captures what graduate school was like. He particularly enjoyed the scene where the kid wigs out and starts screaming in the middle of the library; said he saw that happen several times. :D

Also Scho if you don't mind B/W I highly recommend Arsenic and Old Lace the original Dark Comedy.Hilarious topic as well.

Are we intentionally sticking with under the radar choices?
Death to Smoochy never got the kind of traction I thought it should. And how Dogma largely vanished from the landscape is beyond me. Is Dr. Strangelove sufficiently obscure? |

Porky's is another good one. |
I'm trying to find this movie online for free to watch and I'll be damned if I can. I'm good at finding everything for the most part but this one is hard as hell.:# Quote:

No problem at all with B/W. Watched plenty of 3 Stooges, Little Rascals, To Kill a Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men and lots more. Quote:

Another one of my favorite old comedies is The Man With One Red Shoe. For whatever reason it wasn't very well received, but I love it. Great cast, funny story, plus young Carrie Fisher in leopard spot bikini underwear! What's not to love?

But all you really need for streaming is the Kodi shell and a working repo [Excursion Redux for me]. I can't convince you of anything you don't believe, but it's a robust open source tech, not some shady fly-by-night. I've had it and use it regularly for nigh on to 6-8 years. |

But nothing connected to Kodi has even hinted at viruses or malware on my system. But I only install the shell and the repo from the official developer site. Some of the folks in the thread I linked might be more helpful. There might be even newer/better solutions. But my setup works for me, so I haven't been scouring about for anything different or new/improved. |
It's not your Airplane or Animal House type comedy, but I went to see Silver Streak in the theater in 1976 and went back and saw it again a few days later, I've only done that couple of times.
It has a lot of great actors who have left us. It stars the late Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, Jill Clayburgh, Ray Walston, Scatman Crothers, Clifton James, Richard Kiel and Patrick McGoohan. Along with Ned Beatty and Fred Willard. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...14,317_AL_.jpg https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...14,317_AL_.jpg https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...14,317_AL_.jpg https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...14,317_AL_.jpg https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...14,317_AL_.jpg <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Cze43Ds2Z40" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I saw it on HBO a couple of times, but that was in the 80's. I remember the CIA guys, Coleman, were sitting behind a glass wall watching Hanks and various woman. I looked up that blonde, name Lori Singer, she never hit it real big, but did have steady acting jobs. She had dress with the deep back side. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tqbuWpkoth0" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Lori Singer starred opposite Kevin Bacon in Footloose. That was her big movie. Don't recall ever seeing her in anything other than this. She looked far better in this than Footloose, though. That dress..... goddamn. |
