Ruthless People and other great comedies

I just rewatched Ruthless People after 10-15 years and couldn't stop laughing. Bette Midler is an underrated actress/comedian and Danny DeVito is always a riot. If you pay enough attention, you will see "Frankie Carbone" of the movie Goodfellas in a scene.

Highly recommend.

Down and Out in Beverly Hills is also great. (Just rewatched as well)

What About Bob?

There are others I'm going through from the 80's early 90s.

Any recommendations? :hmmm:

siberian khatru 07-03-2019 12:09 PM

Great movie. My favorite scene/line:

I'm trying to think of something really under the radar.

I assume most people know Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer.

Maybe Three O'Clock High?

Huffmeister 07-03-2019 12:27 PM

Micheal Keaton had a lot of great comedies in the 80s:

Night Shift
Mr. Mom
Johnny Dangerously
Gung Ho
Beetlejuice

Baby Lee 07-03-2019 12:43 PM

Noises Off is about as hard as I laughed at a movie.
It takes a bit to set up the payoff, but when it's in full swing of the hijinks, it just comes at you in waves.

Hardest I laughed at the theatre was probably Something About Mary.

I wish Johnny Dangerously held up better than it did.

My sister and I thought that was the funniest movie ever made when we saw it in the theater as little kids.

Revisited it in college and there were amusing parts. But it was a little hokey, certainly not an all-time classic.

Frazod 07-03-2019 12:47 PM

Ruthless People and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels are probably my two favorite comedies.

Two movies before this era that were pretty damn good were Kentucky Fried Movie and Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.

The scene where Woody Allen is trying to break open the chastity belt of Lynn Redgrave is hysterical.

Also the scene were Burt Reynolds and Tony Randall are in the brain of a man as he is trying to get an erection for sex might be one of the greatest ever!

Another great dark comedy that is hard to find is Divorcing Jack. If you can find it, it's well worth.

Love that movie, but it's a toss-up whether I love it more for the movie itself or how much Garry invested in it with his comedic sensibility and how blunt and hilarious he was in reaction to it flopping at the box office.

Another comedy in the spirit of Ruthless People is The Ref. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis play a bickering married couple held hostage by Denis Leary. If you like your comedy with a nasty edge to it, this movie is for you.

I think it’s got some truly great bits in it. The Hoffman/Beatty role reversal is solid.

Death to Smoochy never got the kind of traction I thought it should. And how Dogma largely vanished from the landscape is beyond me.

Is Dr. Strangelove sufficiently obscure?

I posted that to give you an overview, more that just a namedrop of a program.

But all you really need for streaming is the Kodi shell and a working repo [Excursion Redux for me].

I can't convince you of anything you don't believe, but it's a robust open source tech, not some shady fly-by-night. I've had it and use it regularly for nigh on to 6-8 years.

I've AVG Internet Security forever, and it's always the first thing that goes on a PC after the OS.
But nothing connected to Kodi has even hinted at viruses or malware on my system. But I only install the shell and the repo from the official developer site.

Some of the folks in the thread I linked might be more helpful. There might be even newer/better solutions. But my setup works for me, so I haven't been scouring about for anything different or new/improved.

DeepPurple 07-10-2019 02:24 PM

It's not your Airplane or Animal House type comedy, but I went to see Silver Streak in the theater in 1976 and went back and saw it again a few days later, I've only done that couple of times.

It has a lot of great actors who have left us. It stars the late Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, Jill Clayburgh, Ray Walston, Scatman Crothers, Clifton James, Richard Kiel and Patrick McGoohan. Along with Ned Beatty and Fred Willard.

I had completely forgot about that film, I just looked at IMDB and I had given it an 8 out of 10. I see it only did $8 million and cost $16 million. Anything with Dabney Coleman is usually great and that's when Tom Hanks was really funny, before the dramas.

I saw it on HBO a couple of times, but that was in the 80's. I remember the CIA guys, Coleman, were sitting behind a glass wall watching Hanks and various woman. I looked up that blonde, name Lori Singer, she never hit it real big, but did have steady acting jobs. She had dress with the deep back side.

Yeah, I really don't get how that wasn't a hit; it's one of my favorite Tom Hanks movies. I liked it more than Big. Jim Belushi and Dabney Coleman in particular were hysterical.

Lori Singer starred opposite Kevin Bacon in Footloose. That was her big movie. Don't recall ever seeing her in anything other than this.

She looked far better in this than Footloose, though. That dress..... goddamn.

Speaking of an underappreciated favorite and a hot co-star;
