Thought anyone who puts one of those jerseys was automatically openly gay but I guess this is a thing.

I'm kind of surprised that we (until now) haven't had an active NFL player who has been "out." Seems like it should almost be a non-issue these days.

How good is this guy?

I am speaking hypothetically, but say you were a fringe player, and you think you might get cut before the final roster is set. If you come out as gay, in today's climate you may be able to force the team to keep you on the roster, at least for a couple of weeks until the media coverage dies down.

Sorry if this has already been said, I am just too tired to read the entire thread on my phone.

I am just saying that a player coming out as gay could put the team in an uncomfortable position if they were to cut him.

The implication would be that he was cut because he was gay, even if that's not the reason. Social media, especially Twitter, could start targeting the team, head coach, etc. in several different ways in retaliation for what they could consider bigotry and homophobia.

They could even target team sponsors like Coke or Pepsi, etc. Look at the pressure put on companies that did business in Georgia after the voter suppression bill was passed.

I am not saying it would be right, but I can see a team keeping that player on the roster just to avoid any possible backlash, at least for a week or two.

That happened with Michael Sam. Though there was plenty of evidence that he sucked, before he was cut. Ironically, it happened more when Dallas cut him than it did when the Rams did. I guess it's because they drafted him. Who knows?

Well, this will end up being a shitstorm. The team and players will now go under a woke microscope. The media will be waiting to pounce on anybody who says anything even remotely negative, while pumping Nassib up the greatest player ever, regardless of his abilities.

I'd rather it happened to Denver, but the Fade is nearly as good.

There haven't been any active, employed gay players.

Other than Michael Sam, who barely satisfies the "active, employed" part, other gay players have waited until after retirement to come out.

I think it's pretty well known that the NFL "fraternity" is far less tolerant than the NFL public corporation.

We all saw the Tweets from the NFL and the Raiders PR department yesterday. Looks like unicorns and rainbows on the surface but you can pretty much bet it's not all roses in the locker room.

chiefzilla1501 06-22-2021 07:33 AM

Also, Nassib is pretty much guaranteed this year anyway. And unlike Michael Sam is good enough to be around for a while. So the raiders weren't going to cut him anyway. Maybe he just came out because he felt like it? Crazy thought.

Yeah, my personal opinion is that people looking for ulterior motives are wasting their time.

The dude finally felt ready to come out and so he did. Possibly the timing of it was tweaked to coincide with Pride month but other than that, I just don't see anything huge he gets (or doesn't get) by doing so.

They may have all been retired before they came out but there have been plenty of closeted gay men in the NFL over the years, which is what makes Nassib's announcement all the more courageous.

I'm absolutely certain he'll hear about it, not from teammates, but from opposing fans. Millennials and Gen Z'ers don't find shame in homosexuality and they're 6 times as likely as previous generations to be homosexual.

Yep, that was exactly my point. He's the first player to tell the guys he shares a locker room with that he's gay. Like I said, locker rooms are notoriously anti-gay, it's well known.
