An astronaut who should be more famous - John Young.

I'm generally familiar with the Mercury Seven, and I've heard of John Young, but wow. Check out this resume.

Named in the second group of NASA astronauts alongside guys like Neil Armstrong and Jim Lovell.

Longest astronaut career at 42 years.

Flew and commanded Gemini, Apollo, Apollo lander, and space shuttle craft.

First space flight of the Gemini series (part of two-man crew).

First person to do a solo around the moon (Apollo 10).

One of only three people who has gone to the moon twice (once landing, once orbiting).

Ninth guy to walk on the moon (and drove a lunar rover, which is really cool).

First person to fly the space shuttle (Columbia initial launch).

Fastest speed ever attained by a human (with the rest of his crew - Apollo 10, just shy of 25,000 mph).

Logged 835 hours of spacecraft time.

First person to fly six space missions.

That's a heckuva resume.

To John Young. (Clink.) A guy who really knew his way around outer space.

Even more than the moon landing, I'm wowed by the fact that he piloted Gemini, Apollo, Apollo lander, and space shuttle craft. That seems amazing.

He flew on the Saturn 5 twice. The most powerful machine ever built by man. 363 ft tall and over 7 million pounds fully loaded.

I’ve always said astronauts are the closest thing we have to comic book heroes, it’s the ultimate act of superhuman bravery

Imagine being Bruce McCandless, the first man to fly untethered in space using a jetpack... balls of steel, all of them

According to wikipedia, he was a superhero before becoming an astronaut, too.

In 1962, he set two world time-to-climb records while flying his Phantom II, attaining 3,000 meters (9,843 ft) from a standing start in 34.52 seconds and 25,000 meters (82,021 ft) from a standing start in 227.6 seconds

I don't know what the ceiling for a Phantom II is, but that seems like it would be above it.

That record stood until a stripped-down (not even painted) F-15 annihilated it.

If we ever figure out how to shrink people down and load them into a football, Patrick Mahomes could make it happen
