Hmm Ryan who I believe is better than Breeland wants 10 mil a year.

I’m told he won’t take less than $10M per year he earned last year.</p>&mdash; Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1240688258985553921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 19, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

All the more reason to dump Sammy.

Yeah. He needs to go. I don’t even care if we get a 5th for him.

I disagree.

If they can extend Watkins where he helps the cap situation, they retain a guy who knows the system, has trust with Mahomes, and has big play ability. Watkins' health remains a concern, but he is still young and is a tremendous talent. If teams dedicate scheme resources to Kelce/Hill, we have seen Sammy feast.

D-Rob is the guy you can replace with a draft pick. There would be no immediate pressure to acclimate another young receiver with Hardman and Pringle able to step in and contribute more in a #4/#5 role.

Sammy is not guaranteed to get any big offers if he is released, knowing this upcoming crop is deep. He might want long term security instead, and should strongly consider staying. He's vocalized his appreciation for the coaching and training staff in KC, plus he will be on a perennial contender.

Makes too much sense to add a couple years to his current contract where everyone benefits.

How about a 3 year Watkins extension, $30M, convert $10M of his $13.75M base salary to signing bonus to bring his cap hit down to $13.5M in 2020...

Then it’d be about the same hit for the remaining years.

Yes, I was thinking something similar to this. I'm fine with that $14 million base number, but not the $21 million cap number for this season....

So you expect Watkins to take less money?

If he's guaranteed $30+ million over the course of the next couple seasons, yes.

I doubt teams will offer him more than $14-15 per on any deal given his injury history.

Might as well be secured from 2020-2022 where he will be turning 30 years old. I offered other reasons why a Watkins extension is in his best interests.

He better make less than Hill and Travis.

my understanding (and I'm probably wrong) of a salary to bonus conversion is, whatever is converted gets spread out evenly over the remaining years of the contract, and is dead money. So a 10 mil conversion would end up being 3.33mil per year over the remaining 3 years.

I guess that's ok if the plan is to keep him that long. But if he's not in the plans long term, whenever he gets cut/traded/etc, you're still stuck with that dead money hit for those years. Do that on enough contracts, and that's an issue.
