LMAO? Donger buddy? Tool? Really? That's an impressive surprise. I'm a big fan as well. Have seen them in person more than any other band.

I think their new album is a bit of a disappointment though. Not terrible. But it feels like a bunch of recycled riffs of their previous albums all mashed up together.

Have you ever seen them in concert?

Fish 06-01-2021 10:51 PM

I was a drummer in high school. Danny Carey in the mid 90s just completely blew my mind. Not to mention, he was from Lawrence, KS. Not sure if you've seen this or not, but it's insanely impressive. His drumming skills are just off the charts...

Kurt Cobain throwing shade at Tool back in the 90's:

Quote:

He told MTV about soon after the 1993 release of "Sober" clip: "[Sighs] Oh God, I hope they get sued! It is such a ripoff, it's a shameless ripoff! I mean, I wanted a Brothers Quay style, but I didn't want anything like that. That was terrible!

"I mean, it's a neat video - it's really nice to look at, but I'd rather watch Brothers Quay video."

Focusing on some specific details that really grind his gears, Kurt added: "Meat going through pipes, shameless! They should be slapped on the wrist for that!"

Also has a great live cover of No Quarter.

Donger a Tool fan? Crazy.

Greatest band of all time, and Danny Carey is the greatest drummer of all time.

Fear Inoculum is a ****ing masterpiece and their second best album, I don't care what anyone says.

Also, I know this is a Tool thread but since Dane brought up APC I'm bringing up Puscifer...grossly underrated and their new album Existential Reckoning is a hidden gem that hasn't got nearly the attention it deserves.

This is a pretty stupid comment. While your overall thesis might be true, it has nothing to do with fans thinking DC is the best. Every fandom, not just music fandoms, think their guy is the best. Hardly uncommon. It’s no different than Metallica fans who think Lars is a decent drummer or RHCP fans who think that Flea is anything other than annoying. Most of it is self aware hyperbole, and that’s okay.

There really is no denying that DC is one of the best technical hard rock/metal drummers out there and unquestionably the godfather of incorporating complex polyrhythmic technique in popular hard rock/metal, but man that is a mouthful compared to just saying the best.

FTR, it’s the “you just don’t get it” crowd that makes Tool fans the worst.

Amazing is very strong. He’s a very good popular rock bassist, and he certainly helps define RHCP’s sound. If we move out of the popular rock genre and compare him against people that are actually schooled in music rather than failed guitarists, he’s really nothing special. All that being said, he could be the greatest bassist ever and he’d still be incredibly annoying.

My hate for the RHCP burns brighter than 10,000 suns.

I hate RHCP too.

But the slap/pop style is just far too awesome, and he's really ****ing good at it. He's not my favorite, but from a technique standpoint it's far more difficult to get right than just fingering it, or playing with a pick.

I fiddle around with my bass (i have 3) when i get bored. I'm far from a musician by any means, im just a bored guy with a couple of electric basses and some practice amps. I sit in front of YouTube watching Bass Covers w/tabs as i play along to my favorite songs.

And while playing Tool's 46 & 2 sounds great to my ears, it's nowhere near as complicated as trying to (and failing horribly) at replicating some of those Flea tabs.

And while i like Fieldy's sound better, the amount of notes and technique required to replicate a Korn bass cover just isn't as complicated as a Flea RHCP cover.

If i had to pick one bassist i wish i could emulate, it'd be Ryan Martinie.

I know Les Claypool is the default answer for Slap/Pop bass, and im certainly in awe when i watch/listen to him, im just not big into Primus or his sound.

htismaqe 06-04-2021 11:27 AM

I can't stand Tool and it's really not them or their music.

I had a friend that went through a "tool" phase where that's literally all he listened to for months. I got so sick of it that I can't listen to them even now, 20 years later.

I mean, I don’t think slap bass is really much more difficult than fingerpicking, it’s just different. I don’t think just because one plays a slap style that they are better than someone who doesn’t by default. Great players incorporate all kinds of styles. Look at a guy like John Myung who certainly wouldn’t be known as a slap player and tell me with a straight face that he isn’t a significantly more technically advanced player than Flea.

Further, I don’t think Flea brings anything new or interesting to slap bass playing anyway. It’s just that most people who listen to RHCP don’t listen to a much real funk where slap bass is more popular. Take Victor Wooten, another guy who I wouldn’t pigeonhole as a slap player, but his slap play is leagues ahead of Flea.

I think the problem is that people who are genuinely virtuoso level players on their instruments, aren’t going to be players in popular bands. The kind of music that interests a virtuoso isn’t the kind of music that interest average Joe. Take The Aristocrats for example. Incredible playing that 99% of people will never hear.

I worked with a guy that loved Chevelle but hated Tool. I didn't get that at all. Very similar with Tool being more long form experimental (in a way like the Floyd.) I really like theme albums, long experimental shit, and the whole art associated with the music.

I think of Tool as "precision anger." Or surgical anger. It's not raw guitar and vocals - it's focused and prolonged. Great for cutting the lawn or lifting weights.

I think of Tool as "precision anger." Or surgical anger. It's not raw guitar and vocals - it's focused and prolonged. Great for cutting the lawn or lifting weights.

I might be preaching to the proverbial choir here, but there are a few bands I love who do the theme album justice - The Books and Native Construct. They kick ass.

Carey hits more than drums in KC!

Saw a Donger thread entitled "Tool" and couldn't resist the urge to say "yes, yes he is".

ROFL

In all seriousness, I can't stand Tool. :D

The title of this thread could be "The Greatest Band of all Time" and it would mean the exact same thing.

Really well done. The creativity on display with these guys is incredible.

Missed out on tickets, I have to settle on the St Louis show a week from this Fri instead.

Really hope they cut Culling Voices out and add 7empest back before then. Love CV but I can't die without seeing 7empest live.

7empest would be great, but they’ll have to cut a couple songs to make it fit. Guess if they cut CV and CC Trip, I’d be good with that. Drum solos are boring as hell. Even DC drum solos. Ideally they’d drop The Pot as well. The Pot and CV are probably their only 2 non-segue songs that I just don’t care for.

Some great seats available from sellers that can't go. I wasn't planning on going, but if I can get a great seat that'll change.

Friend of mine streamed a lot of this show on FB. Looks like it was great.

Radiohead is far superior though.

Yeah, I mean Tool is okay. But goddamn, talk about every single song sounding the same...

Ummmm.........that's not even close to being true. And I am saying that as a big fan of Radiohead. I love both bands.

I just saw Tool in Tampa in February. Their show was amazing. They are one of the rare bands who care more about giving you a light and visual experience along with the music than about having themselves in the spotlight.

Ok, I’m an idiot I guess. I never post pics. Thought it was as simple as posting to Imgur and copying the link. Guess not.
