Just read the book. 80's nostalgia porn. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Hope the movie is half as fun.

Miles 07-27-2017 12:37 AM

Agree. The book was a lot of fun and 80's nostalgia.

Miles 07-27-2017 12:46 AM

For those who haven't read it the audiobook is excellent.

siberian khatru 07-27-2017 08:30 AM

Nice use of Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination"

DJ's left nut 07-27-2017 08:45 AM

looks like the movie is going to spend a lot more time on life in the Oasis than I'd hoped.

I thought the most interesting thing about the books was the interactions in real life and how he navigated that.

As for the book itself, eh, it was a little too 'young adult fiction' for my tastes. Had too much of that teenage love angst and Twilight vibe to it. By about 2/3 of the way in, I realized I was just reading it because I was pot committed and not because I was actually enjoying it.

But it had a lot of interesting movie potential (building the world could be very cool), it just looks like they tipped the balance too much towards VR based on the trailer.

I loved the book. And I generally don't like YA stuff.

I did not, however, like Cline's next book ("Armada"). I didn't even finish it.

Where RP1 actually worked the pop culture stuff into the story, it felt like in Armada he was just throwing out nostalgic things for the sake of doing so. It got to the point where it was embarrassingly obvious that the references were contrived just to make the audience happy.

I think the final straw for me--although I had already been rolling my eyes for chapters--was when aliens overran the moon base and one guy went down fighting while quoting Khan from Star Trek (in turn a quote from Moby Dick).

Nobody, in their last moments as they were being obliterated by aliens, would have the presence of mind to spew Star Trek quotes.

At that point, he went too far, and I just shut the book. I had already been reading it more out of a sense of duty to finish the thing as opposed to actually enjoying it.

Chazno 03-29-2018 07:53 AM

Saw it last night. I thought it was pretty decent. For the record, I didn't read the book.

Armada was a pretty blatant rip off of Enders Game, mixed in with a bit of The Last Starfighter.

BigRedChief 03-29-2018 02:45 PM

Didn’t read the book. I thought it was a good fun movie. Really enjoyed all the pop culture references from music, TV and movies circa 1975-early 1990’s throughout the movie. Not Easter egg stuff but major parts of the movie are set in other famous movie sets, used their props and costumes.

CGI was state of the art and well directed. Spielberg knows how to make these movies with his eyes closed. It’s just a fun popcorn movie.

DaneMcCloud 03-29-2018 08:35 PM

Anyone see it in IMAX 3D? My daughter wants to see it tomorrow at Universal.

We saw “A Wrinkle In Time” tonight.

How was that? I loved the book when I was a kid, but the reviews of the movie have been pretty bad.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing Ready Player One. The book was a fun trip down memory lane.

whens the last time a Spielberg movie sucked because of his direction? Especially a popcorn movie with tons of pop culture references?

I don't have a frame of reference because I never read the book but my daughter said the book was much better. The movie didn't include several characters and the description of "The It" was much different than what was shown on film.

I thought the film was just "okay", although the lead actress, Storm Reid was very, very good. Overall, it felt "stiff" to me and it spent too much time building up the characters before tessering, which kind of left the "Mrs." flat, IMO.

If my daughter didn't have so much passion for the book, I'd say it's a Netflix/Premium Channel screener and not to waste any money in the theater.

We're seeing it in IMAX 3D at 12:30 today at Universal City Walk. The theaters have those huge leather recliners, which are awesome, but I haven't seen a 3D film since Avatar, which gave me a headache.

Hopefully, it'll be a much better experience.

DaneMcCloud 03-30-2018 04:49 PM

I think this was Spielberg’s best “family” movie since E.T., although it did have some unnecessary swearing, IMO, that didn’t exactly move the plot along, kinda like Avatar.

And this movie was made to be seen in IMAX 3D, IMO, especially all of the scenes in the Oasis.

We’ll probably see it again in IMAX and it’s definitely a Day One purchase when it comes to Movies Anywhere.

Leather Recliners are the only way to go. I wont go see a movie anymore unless it’s a theater that provides those

every theatre in the TB area but two has the leather recliners and order and reserve seats online. The closest one to me in a “rich” part of town doesn’t. Go figure.

Deberg_1990 03-30-2018 10:44 PM

It was decent. I wasn’t enthralled by it but I wasn’t bored either.

I’ll say that one sequence that takes place inside a popular Kubrick movie is a knockout. Spielberg is a genius designing action sequences.

l agree. That was a fantastic sequence. I remember thinking when it finished, wow that was cool. Spielberg is an expert at directing action sequences.

This was actually a better movie than i thought it would be. Kept interest the whole way i can't call it a turd like expected.

Wichita doesn't have any for family friendly movies, only for their 21+ theater. Fuggin' joke.

patteeu 04-02-2018 12:02 PM

Saw it. Enjoyed the movie. The 3D was good (I haven't been a 3D fan in the past).

The seats in the AMC Independence IMAX suck. It felt like sitting on a squatty potty (the seats were low) with a rigidly and uncomfortably upright back. Would not go there again.

In the book they aren't. The book is bad, and the movie was worse. I actually enjoyed the book for what it is, but Cline shouldn't have been anywhere near this script.

Chieficus 04-02-2018 09:02 PM

It wasn't bad but it was different from the book in a lot of ways. Both my wife and I read and enjoyed the book (though it wasn't without it's own flaws, especially early on). We had the theater to ourselves when we saw it, so we did a lot of conversing about the differences.

That probably hindered the experience. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't read the book.

Bowser 04-06-2018 05:41 PM

Just got around to seeing this. Was better than I expected. I had read the book and had no idea how they were going to make it work in a two hour movie, but they did a pretty good job of it. Loved the Kubrick scene, I grinned the entire time. I think I'd have to see it like five times to pick up all the nostalgia bombs dropped throughout it.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos on all the Easter eggs and not so subtle references to pop culture.

I appreciated the nod towards Excalibur of all movies, too.

Turns out AMC just opened a renovated theater in Wichita, complete with leather recliners. Took my son to see Ready Player One, and we both really enjoyed the movie and have both read the book.

BigRedChief 04-08-2018 08:51 PM

$391 million globally in 11 days of release. Looks like Spielberg still has the popcorn movie touch.

Felt a little silly being in the theater for this. Definitely a movie for pre-teens.

Do me!! What did you call 'electronics are for adults' kids. Right there in the 80s with all its distractions, and splitting my time between bicycles, creeks and soccer balls during daylight, and at the library or on the couch with a book at night.

On the 'more engaged with society' side, we did go to the movies pretty darned regular, often the Crest Drive-In, so we got three movies at a go.

But I've never really had much of anything in terms of video games, remote control stuff, action figures, cartoon character toys, etc. More books, sports equipment, BMX stuff, Skateboard stuff, Tonka Trucks, Hot Wheels, etc.

Like many (most?) people my age who grew up in rural Missouri, I spent a lot of time outside. I still had plenty of time to play a video game at the local pizza place or make a trip into the suburbs for a movie. I didn't really call anyone outside people. That was just everyone I knew.

ROFL ROFL - the extent of my video game experience was going to Fun Factory at Bannister Mall with my report card for free tokens.

And then, since I had no practice I sucked balls at it and my tokens were gone in 5 minutes, so we switched to SkeeBall in subsequent semesters so we could at least redeem prizes.
