I don't think Alex Smith has made one anticipatory throw like this in his entire career.

He read his key. The safety bites on the inside route and his #1 read has the inside lane...that's all he needed. Lay it up and let your guy make a play. This is the kind of play Alex can read, but the kind of throw he's hesitant to make.

Lots and lots of QBs in this league won't release the ball at that point in the play.

That's not a preseason throw. That's a regular season throw. Mahomes was out there clubbing baby seals.

Alex would probably be running from that DE.

Also worth pointing out that Robinson ran that double-move route to perfection. That route is designed to bait the corner into thinking he can undercut the out portion of the route...and you can see he takes it – hook, line and sinker. Robinson was free and clear after the 2nd move. Really, really solid route running.
