The Office: A Spin Off

It is happening.

In the new series, per the logline, "The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters."

I'm excited because I'm Office fan #1
but I'm not optimistic. There is no way to recapture the magic

srvy 05-09-2024 07:36 AM

I have never watched one episode of The Office. I only know it exists through Memes and GIFs. I guess we will be getting more!

What an unappealing cast that would be.

Jason Whitlock as Creed.
Joe Posnanski as Toby
Brooke Pryor as Angela

I mean sure - we'd struggle to come up with Jim and Darryl, or even baseline competence like Stanley (or even semi-likeable idiots like Michael, Dwight and Kevin) but surely we can come up with some composite characters even if they're largely fictional.

penguinz 05-09-2024 08:40 AM

Going to be a complete dumpster fire of a show.

The Office was good more because of the chemistry between the actors than the actual story/writing.

I was thinking of the current crew (particularly the Opinion staff).

The Franchise 05-09-2024 09:19 AM

I can almost bet that this doesn't go beyond the first season.

ThrobProng 05-09-2024 09:27 AM

I'm completely sick of remakes, reboots, and spin-offs.

Even a show as tame as The Office couldn't be made today, thanks to the "sensitivity" of modern audiences. This new show will almost certainly be dogshit, with gutless writing and bland humor. It will, however, showcase an extremely diverse workplace.

ToxSocks 05-09-2024 09:42 AM

Have any of these reboots/spinoffs ever worked. I can't think of any.

Though i did enjoy the Ashton Kutcher - Two and a Half Men, but i feel like im in the minority with that.

To be completely fair, most would've said the same thing about the American version of The Office once announced.

That show just shouldn't have worked. But man did it.

And the reason I say that is that I HATED Michael heavy episodes. Thought they were just awful. But then when he left the entire show fell apart. So you realized that a character that you really didn't like as a central focus was instrumental to the success of the show.

How rare is that?

I mean yeah - the best bet is always that a show isn't going to work. Especially an ensemble show where you just don't know who's going to be a breakout character and if you've cast/written that character well enough. It would've been so easy for them to mis-cast Michael and have the show crater. Or Jim. Or Pam. Or Dwight. When you need strong support from several different characters and failing on any one of them could crater the whole thing, that's working without a net.

Last one is probably Frazier, right? Better Call Saul, but it's a drama rather than comedy. You could really stretch the definition and use The Simpsons I guess.

But really, it's Frazier as far as comedies go. That may be it unless you go back to all those All in the Family spinoffs back in the 70s.

Will it be more diverse than the cast that featured two black dudes, a gay latino, and an asian (more specifically Indian) woman?

On network TV? Not a chance.

I'd guess it will be more diverse than the original, but more importantly it won't be funny.

Pasta Little Brioni 05-09-2024 11:52 AM

The original wasn't even funny

Maybe, maybe not- but the writing was fantastic.

Bearcat 05-10-2024 06:13 PM

I feel like it could work if it doesn't desperately try to be The Office... and that's tough when fans are expecting it to BE The Office.

But, outside of maybe watching a few episodes the next time I have to pay for a month of Peacock to watch a Chiefs playoff game.... it won't be a priority to pay for another streaming service and then watch commercials.

Jamie 05-10-2024 07:10 PM

I bet if it's not a piece of shit it'll air on NBC. I think they originally announced the Night Court reboot as a Peacock show too.

Also that logline makes it sound like it's at least partially focused on the documentary crew themselves.

This might be one of the shittiest takes I've ever heard. You watched what 4 episodes?

Bump 05-12-2024 03:30 PM

the only way this wouldn't suck ass is if they bring back the original, Ricky Gervais as the office manager.

Call me if Ron Swanson and April get a spin-off.
It's about the only one I'd be in for...

Trolls call it "cooking" and he dishes up Hot Pocket takes 24/7.

And not even with the crisper sleeve thing cooked to the right temp, just high for 90 seconds to make the outside molten lava while the inside stays zero Kelvin. And not even something that sounds like it could be appetizing like philly cheese steak, but the shittiest option like highly processed scraps of ham with a pound of provel.

Why Not? 05-12-2024 09:15 PM

Think I would opt to just re-watch The Office over this idea.

CapsLockKey 05-20-2024 01:43 PM

So is the spinoff just going to be watching actors in zoom meetings and them wandering around their homes every episode?

Office dynamics have changed a lot since the original.

That's what I do when I go into the office now too. So stupid...what's the point of even going in?

I have been trying to find a new job working remote and it hasn’t been going well. Zoom meetings, at least in engineering/construction world are dead unless you are willing to take a sizable pay cut. I have Reqruiter’s offering me 30%-50% pay cut over my current salary to work remote.

Ditto, half the time when I come in, I'm literally the only person on the entire floor, and today is one of those days. It's kind of neat, but what the heck is the point? At least if stay home I get to see my wife pop in throughout the day.

I know a lot of companies are going away from it, but many will never go back to the old ways.

I'd imagine that's about as difficult to find as reruns of Friends or Catfish.
