Looks pretty good.

Fish 11-06-2023 08:24 PM

Yeah, that looks good.

Fishpicker 11-06-2023 08:57 PM

I remember watching the original mini-series in 1980. it was re-aired in '90 IIRC. I then went and got the book and finished it in 2 weeks. that was my first novel that I read that wasn't from the kids/YA section.

Cosmo Jarvis is playing Blackthorne. he looks like a landlubber.

alanm 11-06-2023 08:59 PM

This looks good. I can't wait.:thumb:

srvy 11-06-2023 09:48 PM

Oh yeah, I'll be all over this! I read the book and it was awesome then the mini series came out and it didn't disappoint. This should be fire with all they can do now. February can't come fast enough.

BWillie 11-06-2023 10:35 PM

Bad ass

BigRichard 11-07-2023 10:47 AM

I will deficiently watch this. Looks good. Not sure of that main leaders real name but he always plays roles where he is not the lead but I have always liked him in other movies. Believe he was in The Last Samauri and 47 Ronin just to name a couple. Looks like maybe he will be the lead here.

staylor26 11-07-2023 10:50 AM

Looks good for sure, but always skeptical of FX. Their shows are usually hit or miss.

yeah he was in both of those movies. Hiroyuki Sanada is his name. he was the lead in The Twilight Samurai. thats a solid samurai flick.

in Shogun, he plays Toranaga. His historical counterpart is Tokugawa. Cosmo Jarvis is most likely the lead, Blackthorne.

DrunkBassGuitar 11-09-2023 08:47 AM

I need to read it first, I've always wanted to but every time I start I get distracted.

Have any of you ever read Aztec by Gary Jennings? It's similar historical fiction, but takes place right before Cortez lands on the Yucatan, it follows the story of an Aztec man. It's a huge book but it spends a ton of time exploring Aztec culture. I don't think they could make a show about it though.

GloucesterChief 02-27-2024 08:10 PM

First episode is tonight.

Really excited about this one. Looks amazing.

GloucesterChief 02-28-2024 08:21 AM

Thought the first two episodes were pretty good. The actor playing Yabushige was great as a slimy ladder climber. A few ahistorical things but mostly in the background ie people sitting seiza style when they shouldn't be at that time.

They kind of ruined the 'unless I win' moment though.

alanm 02-28-2024 03:19 PM

I like it so far. I guess their only going to show one episode a week.

Fishpicker 03-05-2024 09:31 AM

I like what theyve done so far. Shannon Goss has done well rewriting Shogun for TV. The original Shogun mini series didn't mention the Taiko. the suit of armor shown in episode 2 is historically accurate to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Taiko.

https://samuraistore.com/cdn/shop/pr...g?v=1649759358

The taiko was a peasant from birth but became a general under Oda. Oda was the most aggressive and successful samurai clan. when Oda Nobunaga died, Hideyoshi continued to consolidate power by conquering provincial rulers. Once he had unified Japan he started a campaign to capture Korea. the campaign lasted too long for Hideyoshi to finish. the Taiko could never be SHogun because of his caste. but he married into a samurai family and thus his heir would be eligible. Ishido and Toronaga (Ishida and Tokugawa) both need to muster entire armies for a war that needs to conclude before the Taikos hier becomes an adult.

I'm so glad they rewrote this piece of shit scene

alanm 03-06-2024 12:25 PM

I generally liked the 1980 mini series. But this one is sooooo much better.

KC_Connection 03-06-2024 12:27 PM

This has been excellent.

GloucesterChief 03-06-2024 01:47 PM

I don't think they were filming on location. The main audience chamber looks like a room from Nijo Jyo palace. Of course they used modern day Osaka castle and edited out the fence from the very top.

FX has an absolute banger on their hands with this one.

This show looks like it would be on HBO.

I expect it will do huge numbers for Disney as people catch on to how good this show is.

Will be interested to see if they try to carry it on into a second season because of that (although it would have to be without the source material and we've seen how badly shows can drop off without the source material to fall back on).

Buehler445 03-06-2024 03:07 PM

I'm through episode 3 and I'm all in. I think there is still room for falling on it's face, because we're still pulling on the mystery of it all, but it's got it's hooks into me.

Shogun is a huge book. 2 seasons is possible. but I think this new series is keeping pace with the old mini-series. we will probably end up with 12 episodes in 1 season.

if they wanted to continue making these, they could make a sequel of the Gai-jin novel.

Never saw the series but I recall advertisements for it. Read the novel two or three times years ago. Hopefully this new series does it justice. I'd like to see it but don't have FX. I guess I'll have to watch Dead Pool on Max.

No, it's one season.

However they bought the rights to the Asian Saga so I'd expect Tai-Pan next.

GloucesterChief 03-14-2024 05:47 PM

I will say that since we don't get the characters inner thoughts that this version of the story is a lot more subtle than the book. Except for Yabushige, that actor is really expressive and you almost don't need subtitles to get what he is saying and feeling.

Didn't realize the whole series didn't get uploaded at once. I haven't watched since the third episode, but I may sit on it until it's all available. That's what I'm doing with Masters of the Air. Damn zoomer attention span...

GloucesterChief 03-17-2024 04:26 PM

If they wanted to keep the same actors, they would probably adapt Gai-Jin next. Tai-pan and Noble House deal with Hong Kong. Whirlwind deals with Iran and King Rat would have mostly English and American actors.

wardrobe for this show is world class.

Yabu is wearing a Gorilla themed helmet (I hope we get to see him wear the mask too) and has a dragon embossed bronze breast plate. looks amazing

its very stylized and individualistic but maintains accuracy to the time period

I will let it play out because confirming or denying would be spoilers. It wasn't directed at you though more like viewers like you who haven't read the books.

Megatron96 03-24-2024 08:45 PM

Just finished E2. I know, way behind. But just wanted to come in here and say this is amazing so far. The writing, cinematography, acting, everything.

It's like some of you have never read the books. :)

And yeah they switch some things around and dropped a few things. You're learning stuff that is revealed later but overall this is excellent. Probably the most disappointing thing is, and you're starting to see change, but the Anjin isn't so hostile.

The main reason that artillery was so devastating was the bore was loaded with chain shot.
Normally used by the British Navy to knock down ships' masts. I guess Anjin is holding one ready to load it in that scene

Meh, GoT strayed from the books constantly and everyone still loved the show... it doesn't ruin anything for those who never read the book

Clavell himself took liberties with the true story behind Toranaga's character

I'll see today's epi, but at this point they are telling a different story. It kind of ceases to be the Shogun at this point. It's something else. For GoT, the story wasn't even finished from the author.

The first two Harry Potter movies follow the books exactly. I'm not saying that the movie or TV show or on-screen production needs to follow the book exactly. But there's some stuff that happens that's completely out of bounds. Episode 7 of the Shogun is like that.
