Puffy helmets
How do they pick who wear the goofy looking padded helmets? Are they based on head injuries we’re not privy to? It seems random.
|
at TC the other day...it was the front 7 on defense and the whole OL. Probably a few others that are at risk.
|
Lineman, tight ends, and linebackers I believe

I like puffy boobies..
|
I feel like I've seen running backs wear them more than anybody, but that differs from what everyone else is saying.
|
I still don't understand why they use such hard materials in football gear. Shits basically a weapon.

OL, DL, LBs, TEs, and RBs. I read an article about it when they first rolled these out and I want to say that’s it.. I suppose the numbers don’t show WRs and guys in the secondary are at greater risk while just wearing the normal helmets. Though I will say that it seems like a dumb thing for the league to do. They’re essentially admitting that these players are at great risk of sustaining TBIs while suiting up in normal helmets in Sundays. |

They're called GUARDIAN CAPS (named for the company Guardian who makes them) and they're mandatory this year for all 32 teams OL, DL, RBs/FBs, LBs, TEs all have to wear them in camp.
Apparently it reduces helmet impact by ten percent. Reduces camp concussive injuries. So then, why not wear them all season? Bet you guys would love that. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profoo...ason-practices |
If they work just wear them in games
|
Just don't wear two guardian caps at the same time, it reduces the effectiveness.

I wonder if helmets should just end up being made from a softer material. In general

They explained this in an episode of "Sport Science" a few years ago. Basically the hard shell of football pads spreads the force of the impacts over a larger area very quickly, whereas pads made from a soft foam wouldn't be able to do that, so all the impact force would have to be absorbed by the foam in a much smaller area, making foam pads far less effective. Seems counterintuitive, but makes sense when you watch the simulations. |
As long as they don't make them wear the puffy shirt.

If I had more time I'd photoshop one onto Tua's head the size of a swiss ball
|
Tell me why I'm wrong here - I know I must be, but not currently seeing it.
Essentially, turn the current helmet inside out. If the helmet had most of the padding on the outside of the hard shell, it would take up most of the energy of contact. So if the helmet from the players head was: 3/4" dense foam, followed by hard plastic structural shell, followed by 1" guardian style foam - the helmets would be roughy the same size as current helmets, but absorb more contact energy. Big drawback is it wouldn't display a logo as well. I know I must be wrong, but I guzzled two beers after completing some yard work - and I feel like I had some genius idea. |
They look like Lemmings-from the video game
|
Tua needs to wear one wherever he goes even if not football related.
Saw Kyler Murrey wearing it once in camp looked like this. https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/mi...34c5b7c7ed945a |
I guess the league calls them guardian caps. The only positions not required to wear the caps are kickers, punters, quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs.
