Ridley Scott's NAPOLEON

I love it. MOAR Ridley doing period pieces.

Quote:

During Monday night’s Sony presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the studio revealed the first footage ever of Ridley Scott’s epic from Apple Original Films. Directed by Scott from a screenplay by David Scarpa, Napoleon stars Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader Napoleon Bonaparte.

Rothman noted that an epic tale of this scale has not been seen in years.

Indeed, the footage shown supports that notion. The moody scene takes place on a snowy battle field, as Napoleon led enemy troops onto a frozen lake, and then proceeds to rain cannon fire down as soldiers fall into the water, bodies and blood mixing.
Napoleon stands from a hilltop, watching his carnage unfold. (For those curious, Phoenix does not seem to be speaking in a French accent in the film.)

“Epic is the only proper description of that Apple Original Film,” Rothman said after showing the scene.

The film is said to be an “original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.” Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Matthew Needham and Ludivine Sagnier round out the cast.

I don't understand. I thought all new movies were superhero/Marvel stuff.

mr. tegu 06-27-2023 08:04 PM

I can’t even think of another Napoleon movie. Seems like an under used figure. I’ll be excited for this.

there was one late 70s/early 80s, which was quite significant for the scope of the battle scenes and a wonderful performance by the guy who played napoleon

ridley can do better

Waterloo was a pretty good one with Rod Steiger as Napoleon and Cristopher Plummer as Duke of Wellington. Even Orso Wells as King Louis whatever #.

Waterloo was one of the great historical movies ever created. Up there with "A Bridge To Far" and "Tora! Tora! Tora!".

Oh hell yes. That's gonna be awesome.

GI Jane and Exodus: Gods and Kings would disagree.

But the guy's hit rate is pretty unparalleled. And I even thought movies like Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood were solid flicks.

He's routinely hits the mark on his sci-fi and historical fiction movies. Combine that with a REALLY compelling (and has been noted, underutilized) central character and this movie could/should be awesome.

Where do you stand on Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood?

Because I think that's the floor here. I just can't see this being Exodus.

Come on, man. That kind of trolling is just cruel.

Stewie 06-28-2023 05:36 PM

The greatest thing Napolean's army did was discover the Rosetta Stone. I'm sure it won't be part of this movie like all the others

I actually kinda liked GI Jane, don't think I've seen Exodus

Miles 06-28-2023 08:02 PM

It’s been a while but I remember the director’s cut of Kindom of Heaven actually being pretty good.

I've never seen all of Waterloo, but I remember it being one of those grand epic films that you don't see anymore. I found this on youtube, History Buffs:

I really like this guy's content.

Looking forward to seeing this. I like Pheonix a lot. Honestly, unless the writing sucks this should be a great one.

MarkDavis'Haircut 07-10-2023 08:59 AM

I hope his history here is better than his "history" in Kingdom of Heaven.

mr. tegu 07-10-2023 09:01 AM

Looks awesome.

Phoenix is the one thing that might mess it up. Oh, and the possibility of forcing a love-story into it.

Phoenix occasionally lapses into playing Johnny Cash as some other character. And from this trailer he kinda has that gravelly growl and hangdog countenance to him. If it's Joaquim Phoenix as Johnny Cash as Napoleon, that would be quite a bummer.

DJ,

They are going to force a Napoleon/Josephine love story. It is one of the most famous historical love affairs.

I know. But it's famous because Napoleon's exploits OUTSIDE of it are famous. Stand-alone, it's just another tryst.

So don't let it become the central tenant of a biopic.

If it's a movie about Napoleon, make it about Napoleon. Don't make it about Napoleon's relationship...oh, and there was a revolution and a couple battles and stuff...

Scott's usually pretty good about not overdoing that sort of thing, but the trailer makes me wonder.

Yeah. While I love that movie, particularly the director's cut, I was disappointed to learn that it's about as accurate as Braveheart.

As for this, the trailer seemed a bit off. I kind of wonder if Phoenix is the right guy for this, but he's usually awesome in whatever he does. Seems like this would be more of a Tom Cruise role, but I guess he was busy.

If it gets good feedback I'll probably go see it.

Graystoke 07-10-2023 11:21 AM

I agree. But they mention the tryst in the studio packet release. It is going to be front and center.

I wonder if they'll also establish that she was basically a power-hungry whore who slept her way into relevance...

Probably not. She will be portrayed as a strong female with no flaws.
