I've seen 8 year old Madden players with more discipline.

RedinTexas 06-16-2023 05:44 AM

Willie Lanier. He was awesome.

Kman34 06-16-2023 05:48 AM

Patrick Mahomes if he played defense…

ptlyon 06-16-2023 05:48 AM

Deron Cherry of course

smithandrew051 06-16-2023 05:52 AM

DJ. Only linebacker in NFL history to hit a QB hard enough that it distorted time and reality, which confused a ref so much that he actually thought the QB was stopped by forward progress.

wazu 06-16-2023 05:52 AM

Wanted to vote for Jones, I really did. His efforts have been a major contribution to two championships. But seeing Derrick Thomas play is what made me fall hopelessly in love with the Chiefs in the first place.

oldandslow 06-16-2023 05:57 AM

When I was a kid, I loved Buck Buchanan. Still do.

MarkDavis'Haircut 06-16-2023 05:59 AM

Dave Grayson.

Chiefs/Raiders legend who should be in the Hall of Fame.

A regrettable omission from that hallowed body.

Dunerdr 06-16-2023 05:59 AM

I want it to be Berry or Honey Badger as they both could take over a game. But they both ended it on the weirdest notes.

mdchiefsfan 06-16-2023 06:03 AM

Gotta be Tamba Hali for me.

chiefzilla1501 06-16-2023 06:04 AM

He’s not nearly the best we’ve ever had but will always love Tamba Hali. Gave it everything he had and then some.

ptlyon 06-16-2023 06:17 AM

Ironically, the only Chiefs player I can say I've met was Tamba. He was signing autographs outside of sports nuts the Saturday before a game the year he was drafted.

I did see Dan Saleamua at the sports bar that used to be where the taco bell is now across from the stadium

Dan Saleaumua
James Hasty

Tamba
I voted DT

Spott 06-16-2023 06:28 AM

Dan Saleaumua was always one of my favorites. He always seemed like he was a happy guy and just seemed to fall on every fumble created by DT and Smith back in the day.

FlaChief58 06-16-2023 06:30 AM

DT all day, every day

TwistedChief 06-16-2023 06:40 AM

DT was so special to watch.

Not even close.

Brandon Flowers honorable mention

oldman 06-16-2023 06:52 AM

MR. Willie Lanier.

scho63 06-16-2023 06:53 AM

1. Willie Lanier
2. Derrick Johnson
3. The Secondary of Lloyd Burruss, Deron Cherry, Albert Lewis and Kevin Ross.

Honorable Mentions:
1. The trio of DT, Neil Smith and Dan Saleamua
2. Buck Buchanon
3. Johnny Robinson
4. Chris Jones
5. Nick Bolton - guy is getting better and better
6. Art Still
7. Gary Spani and Gary Barbaro
8. Emmitt Thomas
9. Donnie Edwards and Jared Allen
10. Bill Maas

Lzen 06-16-2023 07:02 AM

Has to be Derrick Thomas.

Though Kevin Ross was pretty great.

Deron Cherry, Dale Carter, James Hasty, Derrick Johnson.......

ChiTown 06-16-2023 07:13 AM

Bobby Bell - maybe the greatest Chiefs Athlete of all time.

DJ

I'm too young and never really saw DT play.

A sneaky pick might be Sneed. The way he comes off the corner on a blitz is sexy.

ChiefsCountry 06-16-2023 08:19 AM

Bobby Bell was the best with DT next

kcgreene 06-16-2023 08:25 AM

DT was something else entirely. But I've always had a soft spot for Derrick Johnson, the man never seemed to get the credit that he deserved outside of KC. I really hope he finds his way into coaching.

Also, I'm digging the Willie Lanier love that I'm seeing! Watching him play in old footage is like watching a man play among boys.

CaliforniaChief 06-16-2023 08:26 AM

DT. His edge rush was unstoppable.

I agree. He signed a helmet and a Chiefs Letterman style coat of mine back in 89. "Bobby Bell HOF 83". Bell was one heck of an athlete and is a genuinely good man.

DaFace 06-16-2023 09:13 AM

Chris probably has as much impact on the game as DT, but he can't match DT's passion for the game. It was infectious.

I also just plain liked DJ, but obviously he'll never top any lists given how bad we were during his tenure.

(And I'm not old enough to have an opinion on anyone pre-90s.)

AdolfOliverBush 06-16-2023 09:15 AM

DT. IMO the best pure edge rusher in NFL history.

JohnnyHammersticks 06-16-2023 09:24 AM

Pleasantly surprised to see James Hasty and Kevin Ross getting some love.

We had a nice run at CB back in my early Chiefs fan days.

James Hasty
Kevin Ross
Dale Carter
Albert Lewis

After living through the Bill Kenney and Tod Blackledge years, and some embarrassingly bad teams, DT made me enjoy watching my Chiefs again.

Chiefaholic 06-16-2023 09:27 AM

While KC has has plenty of VERY good players on that side of the ball. Only one had the ability to disrupt the opponent so much that they has to gameplan around him. And that would be the none other than Derrick Vincent Thomas.

1. Derrick Thomas
2. Buck Buchanan
3. Willie Lanier
4. Bobby Bell
5. Emmitt Thomas
6. Deron Cherry
7. Chris Jones
8. Neil Smith
9. Derrick Johnson
10. Dan Saleaumua

tredadda 06-16-2023 09:28 AM

DT. He was the first true superstar that I remembered KC having in my lifetime. He was just so exciting to watch and such a force for those elite 90s defenses that KC had. It just sucks he doesn’t have more postseason hardware because of Marty and his QB choices.

Rain Man 06-16-2023 10:12 AM

There are players that I adored from my childhood, like Buck Buchanan and Willie Lanier, but I didn't know enough about football to rank them.

As an adult, I would say that my favorite players have been:

1. Deron Cherry
2. Albert Lewis
3. Gary Barbaro
4. Derrick Thomas
5. Art Still
6. Chris Jones
7. Jared Allen
8. L'Jarius Sneed
9. Nick Bolton
10. Bashaud Breeland
Honorable mention: Anthony Davis

The bottom of the list is kind of fluid and I may be missing someone.

Edit: I missed Derrick Johnson on my top ten list. He should definitely be on there. I really like his post-career podcasts with Mike Devito, too.

Read the question again: FAVORITE player, not necessarily best.

Edit: For the record my favorite player was Sherrill Headrick. Not the best ever by a long shot but, God, did I love to watch him play.

Jewish Rabbi 06-16-2023 10:35 AM

Man I can’t believe the last year here hurt Eric Berry’s legacy so much. Dude was unreal when healthy.

Gary Cooper 06-16-2023 10:56 AM

DT easily.

I was 10 when I started watching the Chiefs in 1993. He was the man back then.

PunkinDrublic 06-16-2023 01:25 PM

DT, he loved being a Chief. He embraced KC to the point where he fathered several children.

Son of Logical 06-16-2023 01:48 PM

Although as I have grown to adulthood I can see the holes in his game, I would still say DT is my favorite.

My dad would of said Willie Lanier.

Everyone of my family members that saw Bobby Bell play say he was just as good at rushing the passer as DT was, and was the more complete OLB. Best athlete on the field, etc...

He was on a HOF track until he just.....quit. Such a shame, especially after overcoming cancer as well.

staylor26 06-16-2023 02:44 PM

Still DT and will probably always be DT.

But Jones is 2nd and has surpassed Tamba for me.

DT.

Still my favorite Chief of all time.

Eric Berry was my favorite for a long time. And im probably one of the few around here that never harbored any resentment towards him.

BUT...

He really only gave us a few good years. Between the ACL, Achilles and Cancer....we just didnt get that much from him in reality.

But his rookie year....he was THE reason to watch the Chiefs.

I still remember Haley talking about him his rookie year. About how he came into OTA's/TC and was already coaching up the guys on the defense. I remember that mostly because i was like, "Damn, they must suck if a rookie is coming in and schooling them".

And well...they did suck.

Breeland is real interesting. He was good for us but not great and wasn't here that long. Any particular reason for him?

I was cruising through a list of players and his name caught my eye. He was only here for a couple of years, but I thought he was a silky smooth cornerback, and I enjoy good cornerback play. We live in a challenging era for cornerbacks and he could play the way it was needed. I remember his beautiful game-saving play against the patriots in the regular season where he reached around the guy and knocked the pass down to end the game, and then of course I love a cornerback who can make an interception in the Super Bowl.

In thinking about it more, I missed some guys who might be above him and knock him out of the top ten, notably Derrick Johnson. And Dale Carter and James Hasty were fun players to watch as well. So Bashaud might not be in my top ten, but I really liked watching him play.

Vladimir_Kyrilytch 06-16-2023 03:45 PM

Bernard Pollard is my favorite Chief's D player ever. The way he snapped Brady's leg like that, I think many of you were born after that happened. Only explanation for the wacky poll options and results I'm seeing.

So for you young kids, which is all of you, let me tell you about Bernard. I know him as "the Bone Crusher" from his days at Purdue patrolling centerfield with malice. Then one time against the Patriots, he cleanly sacked Tom Brady, taking his pussy ass out for the season. Rules were immediately changed to better protect that fraud going forward.

Legend.

he only ever did anything cause he was next to the better player, Joe Phillips. Saleamua was like the Ryan Sims next to Julius Peppers at UNC.

I would put Justin Houston in that group. Dont know what happened in the front office to make him just quit playing hard. He had the ability to be at the top of the best defensive players of all time in KC.

Hali was a better Chief.

Houston had one 22 sack season and never finished in double digits as a Chief again.

Hali finished with more career sacks.

Ming the Merciless 06-16-2023 04:23 PM

My favorite would have to be DT during the neil smith days. Those two on the field at the same time was ridiculous.

But I have to say Nick Bolton and Willie Gay flying around out there along with McDuffie, Jones and Karlaftis is pretty special. Last year was the 1st year in a LONG time I have bragged on our Linebackers even before the season started.

If Bolton stays healthy and on this team for a while, he could easily become jersey worthy and my all time favorite

Agreed and Hali may be my favorite modern-era Chief defender so far. I just meant Houston became one of the disgruntled. Quit playing hard when he found that the front office had had enough and wouldn't meet his salary demands.

HemiEd 06-16-2023 04:55 PM

I voted DT, but would actually put Willie Lanier right there with him awful close.

Chris Jones could end up being the best though, glad he still has years left.

When I was 11, the Chiefs drafted DT and Shottenheimer had started turning us around. I was coming of age as a football fan, Chiefs were in a renaissance, and the electricity of DT were the perfect storm. Until Patrick came along, DT was my favorite player of all time. Still my favorite defender.

Vladimir_Kyrilytch 06-16-2023 05:42 PM

Hey womble. Nick wright also says all chiefs fans remember the playoff loss to the Titans for Marcus Mariota fumbling to himself and that's what made it a tough loss. You can tell he is full of shit. That was the forward progress sack fumble game where Triplette retired after ensuring the Chief TD would not count and we would not be allowed to win.

Whatever that Nick wright says is impressive cause it's said through a ball gag.

He misrepresents us. As do you, you UK glory chaser.

Boise_Chief 06-16-2023 06:00 PM
