Sony Playstation 5 thread

I figured we could go ahead and start this.

I wasn't able to watch it today, but Sony had a live event where they unveiled the PS5 console. I don't really have an opinion on the appearance yet, but it can be vertical or horizontal.

Xbox Series X specs look dope.

Xbox sounds like it might have a slight edge in graphics. I'll be going with PS again based on the quality of their exclusives.

I'll need an eye test before changing. At the moment, it's still PS for me.

Gravedigger 03-18-2020 09:02 PM

This competition has never been about specs, it's been about first party exclusives and cost. As long as PS5 doesn't try to sell their system at a ridiculous price like they did with the PS3 then they should be the favorite again. Especially if their launch titles include any sequels like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Uncharted, Infamous, etc.

Dayze 03-19-2020 09:57 AM

when Xbox 360 came out; I bought one; I went through 3 of them in like 12 months with the red ring of death. each time I bought the replacement warranty thing at Nebraska Furniture mart for like 40 or something like that. the finall replacement, I sold it to a co-worker of my wife for like $50 less than it would retail for and applied that to a PS3. Never looked back. Moved to PS4 and PS4 pro.

I'm sure Xbox has resolved the issues, but man - it left such a sour taste in my mouth that I just can't bring myself to even consider getting an Xbox again. love my PS4. I can't even remember the last time it locked up /froze / shut down etc. fires up and plays for hours w/out issue.

not sure if I'll do the PS5; seriously considering getting a computer for gaming. though, that world is a bit foreign to me at the moment. but I'm considering it. I want to set up something for flight simulator and trucking simulator eventually.

vailpass 03-19-2020 12:48 PM

PS5 for exclusive content. Xbox for platform-agnostic content and gaming computer power to rival many PCs.

bowener 03-19-2020 01:03 PM

Where in/on an entertainment center do you put the new xbox? It's 6x6x12 and needs to be stood upright. I do like the appearance of it otherwise.

The Verge does a pretty good job here...

lcarus 03-19-2020 01:48 PM

Im thinking about building a PC before I even consider getting a PS5. Ive been playing games lately that are clearly struggling on my PS4. Nioh 2 in "action mode" has good frame rate and poor resolution and "movie mode" has better resolution but looks like it runs 3 frames per second. Resident Evil 2 remake makes my system sound like a Harrier jet raping a garbage disposal with a weed eater watching while it jerks off.

SuperChief 03-19-2020 02:27 PM

PS5 should be around 100x faster than PS4, so a lot of your issues may be solved from the get-go.

New World Order 03-19-2020 02:28 PM

Sure would be nice to have a PS5 right about now.

That's where I'm at.

Probably buy a launch Series X and PS5 down the road once the exclusive catalog builds up.

Rumor is the former may play PC games in Windows mode.

That and the 3D Audio implementation, can't wait...

I’m only buying one system and it’ll be a PS5. I don’t give a shit about specs and flops. Sony’s exclusives are so much better than the Microsoft catalog and it’s supposed to be cheaper than the Xbox. Sweet! The next God of War will be insane.

I’m a little surprised no one seems to care about the audio deal. There’s huge room for improvement there. I’m really looking forward to the new virtual surround sound headphones.

It’s not the size, it’s the throughput (that’s what she said).

Storage is where the Xbox Series X and PS5 differ radically. Sony has created an impressive proprietary SSD solution that provides 825GB of storage and 5.5GB/s of performance. The Xbox Series X includes a custom 1TB NVME SSD, but its raw throughput is less than half at 2.4GB/s. That could mean load times differ massively between the PS5 and Xbox Series X, depending on what game developers optimize for.

Sony is also allowing PS5 owners to expand storage with regular NVMe PC drives, but there’s a slight caveat. We’re still waiting to see PCIe 4.0-based drives that will match the bandwidth of what Sony has implemented in the PS5, and compatibility could be complex given that Sony will need to validate that drives will be fast enough and compatible with the PS5.

Sony’s expansion does mean that PS5 owners should be able to pick up a fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive and increase the storage of the console with relative ease. Microsoft is using a proprietary expansion card format for the Xbox Series X, and it has partnered with Seagate to produce 1TB expansion cards for launch. We still don’t know the price of these proprietary cards, nor how much fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives will cost later this year.

Didn't Sony get absolutely blasted for using proprietary memory for one of their systems? I remember people were furious about it. It doesn't seem like there's been a negative reaction to the Microsoft solution yet, but I guess they also haven't announced prices.

That would be fantastic. I want Xbox to be as competitive as possible because both companies are at their best when they feel the pressure. Sony got arrogant for the PS3 launch and got hammered in sales for it.

But what about the games? Have you heard anything about new IP coming out of Microsoft studios? Halo, Gears, and Forza don't appeal to me at all.

Maybe M$ partnering with Seagate to make 1TB cards as easy to buy as candy on Amazon overcomes the proprietary stigma.

Meh I think Sony is behind the 8 ball on this and rushing something out to have it at the same time as Microsoft, but their part deals aren't as good as Microsoft's so they need to charge more per system to make up the difference. They're trying to guess what Microsoft is going to charge and then they'll have to decide between $50 - $100 more for their system based on their exclusives and name. I'll be surprised if they cost the same. The press conference didn't tell me anything I didn't already know; wow, it's got similar specs to what Microsoft is putting out, provocative! Until you show me what it looks like and give me at least 3 launch titles I'm not going to get excited about it.

It's like 20% percent less powerful than the Series X when in "boost" mode, which they probably only included to be even remotely close to the new Xbox.

It'll probably be much less powerful in the standard mode of operation. There's no way it will be able to sustain boost for any sort of decent amount of time due to heat issues.

Valiant 03-21-2020 07:54 PM

Don't will be fine. Honestly most of the power is wasted by the developers in programming and shitty code. My problem with Sony is their first party games. Most are QuickTime movies. Spiderman was about it for me.

I also think it is foolish to spend the money on timed exclusives. Ms needs to up their game also. Their first party games sucked this generation. They killed a lot of promising games.

I think the next generation after this will be finally PC's. Upgradable consoles. Basically cheaper computers using proprietary software.

I firmly believe Sony will win keep winning every generation whether it is less powerful than the Xbox equivalent or not.

Those scenes are specifically designed to hide slow data loads from the hard drive. The SSD will fix that in the PS5. If you skip the quick time movie, you'll be sitting at a loading screen.

Vita memory cards is what you're thinking of and yeah, it was a shit show.

The Series X looks nuts too, powerful as hell...the XB1 controller is my fav. of all time and they've only made it better.

Lots of promising stuff that Halo Infinite will be amazing, rumors of Fable coming back, and other intriguing stuff like what will Obsidian's next game be, etc.

I don't think you'll go wrong with either console.

Evidently Sony's new storage management is industry-changing.

article

Quote:

“It has an immense amount of GPU power, but also multi-order bandwidth increase in storage management. That’s going to be absolutely critical,” he says. “It’s one thing to render everything that can fit in memory,” he adds, but a much more impressive feat to render a world that “might be tens of gigabytes in size” almost instantaneously, as Sony’s new console and its M.2 solid-state drive are promising.

“We’ve been working super close with Sony for quite a long time on storage,” he says. “The storage architecture on the PS5 is far ahead of anything you can buy on anything on PC for any amount of money right now. It’s going to help drive future PCs. [The PC market is] going to see this thing ship and say, ‘Oh wow, SSDs are going to need to catch up with this.”

I've had zero problems with my original release PS4 and the PS4 Pro.

As for the price, it may not mean anything but the PS5 Dualsense controller is going to be priced $10 higher than the DS4 at release. I assume the PS5 will be $399-450.

Yeah, the RTX 3000 series are about to come out and they are going to be a huge leap forward. You can go with the latest and greatest or you will be able to easily pick up a heavily discounted used RTX 2070 Super or better as people upgrade. Either way, it's going to be great. :)

I always gold myslef after buying the PS4 pro, it would be the last console for me; I would switch to building a gaming computer.

not that I've been at all displeased with the PS4; but I'm novice when it comes to computer gaming, and some of the stuff I've just casually seen looks awesome; and game selection. Plus I primiarily want a gaming system that will smoothly run X Plane 11 or FS 2020, and American Truck Driver.

I think if i got a gaming rig that would run those games, and other games here and there, that I would never really play the playstation anymore.

of course, I know nothing about gaming computers or how to build one; so I'll tackle that when the time comes. Might have to just pay someone who knows what they're doing a few bucks to build it for me. lol

They have made it such a breeze nowadays with the way cases and motherboards and components are designed and built. Late 90's and early 2000's could be a bit of a pain in the ass but it's basically a breeze now. ESPECIALLY with a million incredible and detailed YouTube tutorial videos.

It can still be disheartening when something goes wrong and things do not work as they are supposed to but it is usually a pretty easy fix in the end and there resources on the internet are endless.

This. And anytime you want to upgrade a component or replace on that's gone bad it's, pretty much, easy. Still, there are things that will give you a ****ing headache every now and then. But the interwebs can help with that too.

I bought a gaming pc I think the beginning of last year. Really nice alienware and a badass curved gaming monitor..

It can be a pain in the ass to sync a ps4 controller to it so I just bought an xbox controller to use (wired) so I dont have to deal with that. I mainly bought it for mods but mods are such a pain in the ass..I'd rather just sit down in my leather recliner, turn on my ps4 and play a game on my 70" Tv. The NCAA mod on Madden and the NCAA mod on nba 2k are nice but I have an Xbox and it's easier to pop in NCAA on that.

IDK if you've ever looked into them, but look up the steam link or the nvidia shield. I believe the shield is the more preferred of the two, but the link can be found dirt cheap usually.

SIGH'S INNNNNNNNNNNNNNN PC. The problem that I was running into was I was wanting to play console games ported to PC. The computer that I had was having was micro studdering. I just switched to back to consoles.

probably didnt have enough power to run the game properly. It happens. Games be demanding now days, well not competitive games.

Would definitely clash with my motif. And that controller is going to get pretty dirty. I do have a lot of rubber gloves left.

Makes it even worse. All you need is a plainish black box with your logo, a disc drive, and a hard drive. That's ****ing it. Now I've got to have a specialized stand to even have the damn thing sitting sideways.

Maybe someone will take the initiative and produce colored skins, like phone cases or something.

Sorry 06-11-2020 07:14 PM

just bring back the grey color scheme.. thanks

Both consoles look like dogshit.

I get what Xbox was trying to do with their "revolutionary" cooling design (lol).

At least the Xbox will work with 90% of people's houses and disappear into the background.

This thing is like what someone in 2002 envisioned "sleek" was going to look like in 2020.

Any word on backwards compatability?

Please tell me those images are fake

I mean the version with the disk looks pregnant. Or something with a hump.

It's like the engineers finalized the "Digital" design thinking that was going to be the only version only for the leadership team to later come back and tell them they changed their mind and they will need a disk version too. ROFL

The PS5 is ugly as sin, but I’ll get it day one. Bought the ps3 and PS4 day one for years and it’s been great.
