I went to a nice restaurant in a group with a girl that was so afraid to order ketchup for her steak, even though that's the way she has always had it.

If you like it, that's good enough for me. I've never tried it.

loochy 11-14-2018 04:29 PM

For a cheap steak, yeah I will. I eat a lot of eye of round for nutritional purposes only and I'll do ketchup with them.

For a good steak, no way...no sauce at all.

TribalElder 11-14-2018 04:29 PM

I roll bbq sauce on everything LMAO

Even a cheap steak deserves horseradish or A1 before you would ever consider ketchup.

Ketchup is designed for French fries and literally nothing else.

Frosty 11-14-2018 04:31 PM

If my mother-in-law cooked the steak - yes. Otherwise - hell no.

Imo it's blasphemous to ruin a good steak with any type of condiment.

BBQ sauce on pork steak but not on beef steak. I don't know, just doesn't do it for me. With a cheap steak, I like pico.

displacedinMN 11-14-2018 04:34 PM

hell no.

Working a reception one night. Had a bunch of fancy meat offerings.
Old farmer says "I don't want any of those fancy things, I just want a piece of meat"

We follow that rule in this house when it comes to steaks.

Dude knows what is good. Pepper is an exotic spice.

Only 4 things I've ever found worthy of steak, even cheap steak.

Raw Horseradish
Creamy Horseradish
Crumbled Bleu or Roquefort
and, distant 4th
that marmalade for the shrimp at Outback

Like the taste of A-1 all right, just seems to ruin steak. Ruin is too tough a word, . . . debase. It debases a steak. Same for most 'steak sauces'
HATE, HATE, HATE Heinz 57
Ketchup is weird. I've gotten to where I hate ketchup most anywhere, even on fries now that dipping sauces and spicy mustards and malt vinegar and all the other superior fry dips are widely available. But I still LOVE it on two things
Home Fries
Corned Beef Hash.

Only place Ketchup is good is poured out on the ground, or being hurled up after you try to eat it.

Better than eating Mayonnaise with a spoon.

BBQ sauce or Horseradish is good on just about anything. Mustard > Ketchup in every aspect especially the Horseradish Mustard. :)

The pizza place I used to work at had the latinos putting ketchup on their pizza, i just about threw up everytime i saw it.

I'm not a big fan of creamy horseradish but then again, I grew up on the real stuff. My dad still grinds it to this day and it's the best right out of the ground. Not a fan of cheese on a steak, especially stuff that is moldy on purpose and smells like socks. :)

I specifically mentioned A1 because even though I wouldn't use it on a GOOD steak, it's worthy of a cheap steak. I prefer to use it with beef roast myself (not the sliced kind but the crock pot kind). I cannot stand Heinz 57. It's just awful.

A1 Steak sauce or nothing. Not the regular sauce either, the peppercorn sauce.

But at least she doesn't put ketchup on her burnt-to-shit steak.

chinaski 11-14-2018 04:57 PM

Depends on the hot dog. If it's a cheapo on sale hotdog from the store for a quick lunch, yeah, I'll do it.

If it's a REAL hot dog (Nathan's, Hebrew National, Sabrett or a Brat) NFW IN HELL.

When I was a kid sure, but not now... yet I'm still not above a little A1 or Heinz 57 sometimes

Pitt Gorilla 11-14-2018 05:16 PM

If pat likes it, it’s acceptable.

seclark 11-14-2018 05:20 PM

i eat all my meat plain.
same w/taters.
but i'm old and i've broke bread with a lot of people that sop their meat and spuds with everything else that's on their plate with a piece of bread in one and and a fork in the other.
it's all going to the same place...piss on it.

mustard makes me gag.
sec

Jerok 11-14-2018 05:21 PM

It's almost like people enjoy different tastes

jd1020 11-14-2018 05:24 PM

I used to put A1 on my steaks but then I stopped doing that. Now I just eat them with salt and pepper and some various rubs and a little basted butter at the end.

No ****ing way would I put ketchup on a steak. Burgers, fries, hotdogs/brats and I'm not sure what else off the top of my head.

Also, **** horseradish with my prime rib. Why is that shit a mandatory condiment for prime rib? Give me the ****ing juice (au jus).

BWillie 11-14-2018 05:28 PM

Maybe that was why he had the lobster when he was eating literally at the adjacent table next to me at Stock Hill a few months ago. He didn't want to be looked at with disgust for putting ketchup on such a nice steak.

I can confirm he did not put ketchup on his lobster - though.

Bugeater 11-14-2018 05:29 PM

God no and there shouldn't even need to be a poll.

srvy 11-14-2018 05:33 PM

Ketchup on spaghetti noodles. Witnessed this gem at a Home Town Buffet. It was horrifying.

Reerun_KC 11-14-2018 05:35 PM

Th more it has to be Doctored up the worse the steak is.

Rain Man 11-14-2018 05:44 PM

According to the article, the only place that Patrick Mahomes II doesn't play ketchup is on the football field.

Rain Man 11-14-2018 05:45 PM

Oh, and I'm a no on the poll question, with the caveat that I don't mind if Patrick Mahomes II does it.

HemiEd 11-14-2018 06:03 PM

Ketchup on anything is disgusting, anything.

St. Patty's Fire 11-14-2018 06:04 PM

Hell ****ing no

I don’t even like steak sauce

Good steak don’t need sauce

TwistedChief 11-14-2018 06:09 PM

I’m pescatarian and don’t eat steak, but Mahomes could shove a Philly cheesesteak in my mouth with ketchup and I’d relish the experience.

Don’t judge unless you’ve thrown for 300yds in another man’s shoes.

Bump 11-14-2018 06:12 PM

I read an article today about how Mahomes doesn't want to order the ketchup for his steak because everyone pays attention to what he does now, but he really wants the ketchup.

Ketchup on on hot dog IS empirically 'odd.' It's not bad, just odd. With the right balance of cheapo yellow mustard and cheapo sweet pickle relish and cheapo buns, it's white trash heaven. It tastes like 4th of July, if you're not the one in charge of the grill.

Sassy Squatch 11-14-2018 06:35 PM

Steak shouldn't need anything on it. If the steaks you're eating don't taste good enough as is, you aren't eating the right steaks.

-King- 11-14-2018 06:37 PM

I've never put ketchup on a steak but I'll fo that before I put steak sauce on it. A1 is ****ing disgusting and overpowering. Can barely taste the steak when you put it on

I like knowing my meat is thoroughly cooked.

That is why you get a thick steak and sous vide it for 90 minutes at 131 degrees. (Getting meat to 130 degrees for an hour passes the FDA food safety criteria.) Then sear each side on the grill. At 131, it comes out pinkish red.

Depending on mood, I might do no more than a little salt and pepper. Or I might sous vide it in a dry rub, sear it over high, and then brush BBQ sauce on it while I grill it medium low.

GloucesterChief 11-14-2018 06:51 PM

Just talking about it has guaranteed that it'll be the Christmas meal here

There really isnt anything that comes straight out of the pan that rich all by itself... no beef base, no salt, no wine or anything else is needed

Mmm

Kman34 11-14-2018 07:05 PM

My dad mixes ketchup and A1 together for his steak.... I have such a man crush on Mohomes that anything he does (as long as it legal) if fine with me...

tmax63 11-14-2018 07:06 PM

Would have to be an absolutely hideous steak before I'd put ketchup on it and even then it would be the last resort if there wasn't any other condiment available that could conceivably improve the outcome.

Kind of like the argument whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich, perhaps a pizza with canadian bacon and pineapple is a thing unto itself.

I don't think pineapple is proper as a 'run of the mill' topping, to be fungible with meats and veggies, but the ham and pineapple mix is a good thing in itself.

I'd rather not eat steak than eat it with ketchup.

I don't eat much steak actually. My wife can't really eat red meat so we've mostly cut it out of our diet. If I order a steak, I'm out somewhere and will splurge on it.
