2018 "What I Want" Mock Draft
I'm not gonna get too in-depth on the players, you know who they are, and I won't muddle this up with highlight vids... So, here goes...
2.054 - Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn 6'1" 206 40YD: 4.44/4.53 3CONE: 7.30 VERT: 34.0" BENCH: 16 I'm going a bit against my own thought process here, but I've noticed a trend of pushing corners down the board a bit by many analysts. While I think there's a more likely than not chance that Davis is gone by now, I do think he's the 7th best CB in this draft and that means he very well could be here, or within short striking distance. Davis fits that aggressive press corner type that it seems the Chiefs want to go back to employing. 3.078 - Breeland Speaks, DE, Mississippi 6'3" 283 40YD: 4.87 3CONE: 7.63 VERT: 32.5" BENCH:? I love Speaks' burst off the edge and overall play. He's a perfect 3-4 DE prospect that can create havoc up front and force teams to account for him. He's very much like a more polished and aggressive version of Allen Bailey coming out. 3.086 - Cole Madison, OT/G, Washington State 6'5" 308 40YD: 5.33 3CONE: 7.86 VERT: 28.5: BENCH: 26 I've been on Madison for a while now and I love his traits in pass protection and as a mover in space. His experience at tackle makes him a quality swing option for the Chiefs who lack quality depth there, but he'll slide inside as a starter. Madison has quietly risen up draft boards over the past few weeks. 4.122 - Dane Cruikshank, S, Arizona 6'1" 209 40YD: 4.41 3CONE: 6.89 VERT: 38.5" BENCH: 25 Cruikshank impressed me with his move from corner to safety this season in a big way. With his aggressiveness and seeing things happen, he developed into a play-maker. He comes downhill in run support in a hurry and has coverage ability in the slot or over the top. His struggles at corner were largely due to squeezing the boundary and focusing on the man rather than the ball. Those deficiencies are masked at safety. His combine shot him up the board, but he has legitimate talent as well. 4.124 - Dalton Schultz, TE, Stanford 6'5" 244 40YD: 4.75 3CONE: 7.00 VERT: 32.0" BENCH: 15 Schultz is the very definition of quality in-line tight end given his solid fundamentals as both a blocker and receiver. He doesn't have elite, seam-stretching athleticism, but he does everything right to get open underneath and has reliable hands (unlike Harris...). 6.196 - Olasunkanmi Adeniyi, EDGE, Toledo 6'1" 248 40YD: 4.83 3CONE: 7.21 VERT: 31.5" BENCH: 26 Adeniyi doesn't have the elite size nor elite physical traits, but what he does have is very good burst off the snap, good strength, good conversion of speed to power, and elite bend off the edge. He may take some time to develop as anything more than a situational pass rusher, but he has the traits to at least supplant Frank Zombo. 7.233 - Zach Sieler, DE, Ferris State 6'6" 288 40YD: 4.83 3CONE: 7.14 VERT: 29.0" BENCH: 31 I've had the pleasure of seeing this kid live a couple times and he's just lights out at his level (Div II). He was completely unblockable and flat-out dominate, so much so that he saw constant double-teams as a Junior and still piled up 79 tackles, 21 for a loss, and 7 sacks. He also comes from the same conference (GLIAC) as Brandon Carr and Matt Judon. I have a feeling this kid is going to be a huge steal. You better be one hell of a player to leave a D-II school a year early to declare for the draft, and he is. 7.243 - Richie James, WR, Middle Tennessee State 5'10" 183 40YD: 4.48 3CONE: 6.87 VERT: 35.5" BENCH: 6 James declared even after an injury-riddled Junior campaign, but his stats his first two seasons are absolutely mind-blowing. The Chiefs definitely need to bring in some stiff competition for the slot position and James fits every bit of that with good speed and outstanding lateral quickness, plus excellent route running and hands. |
honestly, while I think they should draft BAA (weighted), I want FATTIES. I'm tired of getting pushed around at the line of scrimmage. Give me NT's and DE's and OG's. MAULERS.
|
That Zach Seiler guy sounds interesting.I like those small school guys that fly under the radar.
|
Unless they go corner way earlier, I'd be surprised if Carlton Davis makes it past any of the Colts 2nd round picks. They're horribly desperate for another outside corner and have loads of 2nd rounders.
|
I'd be pretty happy with that if it shook out that way. I'd probably tweak a few things, like maybe Edge instead of TE in the 4th depending on who you project to be on the board there, to get someone more polished than Adeniyi.
I'm not really sold on WR in the 7th either, as I think Dieter Kemp Spruce Braverman provides a lot of competition already but I like your pick and reasoning. |
I’m not as high as I was in Davis. He’s got some not great tape out there and gets beat on back shoulder and timing throws a fair amount
|
I'll pass on a 3-4 DE the size of a linebacker

Are people really bitching about the positions we might draft in the late rounds?
Odds are that anybody we draft in those slots isn't going to be on the team in two years. Just draft anyone who will make a longer term impact. That's the entire name of the game. Who ****ing cares if it comes in the form of a WR, DL, or another goddamn RB? If the guy becomes a good player, then you drafted a good player at a spot where odds are stacked against guys who get taken in those slots. Quit your bitching. |

I want our first three picks to be corner, safety, and EDGE. Don't really care about the order. Get your OG's, DT's and others after that.

It's the 7th ****ing round. If you can get a player who does ANYTHING well, you take that player. I don't care if that guy fills a need or not. |
I’m wondering if Ronnie Harrison is there at 54?

All the guys I keep thinking they’ll want ends up gone before 54 |
Just a hunch, but if they feel dire to move up and it seems they feel unsettled at CB.....Cant shake the feeling that while CP thinks they want Hughes or Davis, Jaire Alexander is the actual target.

My favorites are Josh Jackson and Isaiah Oliver as far as fits for KC. KC doesn't normally go for the small corners, so I think those two make the most sense. I think, for Oliver, KC will have to get ahead of CLE at 33 and I wouldn't be surprised if Dorsey makes a move to get up into the late first for him. As for Jackson, I believe he's much more of a pipe dream but we'll see how it shakes. Some guys, like Jeremiah, have him dropping out of round 1 while others have him in the middle of round 1. He's short on starts, much like Hughes and Oliver, but his production in that time is insane and he has the athleticism you want. |

Fuller and Nelson are both under 6’0. We need true outside guys, not more nickel/slot corners. Alexander is electric, and yes, he has played outside and inside, but I don’t know if his college success will transfer over to NFL success. While Hughes is no bigger than Alexander, I think J. Jackson, C. Davis and I. Oliver are better scheme fits given what is already on the roster. |

The only reason I picked Carlton Davis in this mock is that: 1) I don't normally mock trades in these and, 2) I am a bit hesitant about the trade-up scenario and I think he's the guy that has the most likely chance of falling to 54. I think Davis is a quality pick at 54, but he's not a guy I'd move up for. I definitely would trade up for Jackson or Oliver, but I'd prefer that trade contained the 2nd the Chiefs got from the Rams and not much of picks for this year. The one team that fits as a trade partner the most using that idea is New England. Bill has 4 picks in the first two rounds, including a high 2nd at #43, right now and we all know he loves accumulating 2nd rounders. I'd certainly PREFER KC got Jackson at 31 with a trade of 54 and the 2019 2nd round pick. I think some other teams, like SEA and PHI, they are going to want picks this year which I've come to fall more out of favor of. |
I watched Veach’s presser again and I don’t know if he’s blowing smoke or not. It just seems like teams “know” we are trying to move up for a corner.
I’m not entirely sold on that fact. It doesn’t seem like Veach would tell you his plans or make them public more than a week before the draft (when that report came out). He also mentioned 2 corners on the roster that he liked. I’m wondering if he wants to trade up, but not for a corner...maybe for another position like pass rusher? It is lying season and corner is very deep as opposed to pass rusher. |
Just wanted to mention in an aside here that NFLDraftScout.com dropped Billy Price down to 2nd-3rd round with a 72nd overall ranking. Seems teams are concerned about his immediate availability to start the 2018 season with that pectoral injury not healing as quickly as first thought.
The deal for me is, it will heal at some point and he's a legitimate first-round player. My opinion is that if he gets close to pick 78, maybe in the late 60's, I'd like for the Chiefs to move up and grab him. A player with his ability at that point would be an absolute steal. Edit: By the way, they slid board favorite Frank Ragnow up to 46 when they made that adjustment. Personal thought is that he doesn't make it by the Giants in round 2. |

i threw one together using Gil Brandt's top 150. No trades. No players taken that are not still on the board.

2018 "What I Want" Mock Draft
I’ll follow Coogs lead & do that same from the MMQB’s Big Board of Top 100.
54. Jessie Bates, S, Wake Forest 78. Tarvarvus McFadden, CB, Florida State 86. Shaquem Griffin, LB/DB, UCF Comments: I was targeting Isaiah Oliver, Carlton Davis, Ronnie Harrison, Will Hernandez, Billy Price & Sam Hubbard but they were off the board by pick 54. I had to make a choice of either Jessie Bates, Tim Settle or Armani Watts. Bates was the pick. I wanted to go defense again with an emphasis on CB if one fell to me. One did! I like McFadden’s length & press ability. He maybe somewhat slow but he’s the perfect Sutton CB. My other choices were Chad Thomas, Dorance Armstrong & Braden Smith. I want this Griffin kid on my team. Sutton needs to find a spot to play him but his heart & desire will make up for any deficiencies he has. I could have picked Nick Nelson, Kemoko Turay or Rashaan Gaulden. It was a tough call between Gaulden & Griffin but I went Griffin because of his heart. I would have went further but their big board only went 100. |
