He was a great man with a great message. He brought hope to millions, including me. Life very well lived.

“Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.'”

I realize that is a lot of money, but given what he did and how he did it, that's not near what I thought he would be worth.

RIP, Billy. You walked the talk.

Yeah to both. 99? Was still alive?

Eleazar 02-21-2018 08:51 AM

I'll forever identify him with the powerful voice coming out of the speakers in my dad's old Chevrolet during his radio program, "The Hour Of Decision". He was a great man.

Randallflagg 02-21-2018 08:54 AM

I remember as a young teenager - my parents always watched Billy Graham's televised "Crusades" when they would be on CBS? I think...It was always pretty cool when he invited anyone to come to the front and thousands would come down to the stage from the stadium.

He truly was a great man. RIP

Yeah, when I visited and stayed overnight with grandma, I was forced to listen to that radio program. She never missed it.

Later it was the TV show. I listened or watched more of him than my Cardinals games.

That's actually a translation issue; many cities had walls built around them and the door by which people would enter and exit at night was a small door...and getting a camel through those doors was possible but difficult because of the height of the camel...somehow this became the "eye of a needle" reference. From what I understand it's not supposed to be believed that it's impossible for a wealthy man to enter Heaven. Many of God's followers, King David for example, lived in great wealth.

Interesting. I never took it to mean “impossible”. I thought it would just mean you’d have to put the camel through a giant blender and then slowly smush the gelatinous mixture through the needle eye. Seemed like an odd way to make a point.

He also expressed love for Israel, then later apologized for the things that were off color... if the left can forgive Robert Byrd for being a Grand Dragon, I can forgive him for remarks made in 1972

But since you're interested in tearing down a great man, go ahead and find something that talks about him living lavishly on the money he raised

Does the private jet not count? What was he using money on to help people? All I remember him doing was spreading the word of God and buying more ministries to spread that word. Can you please show me all the wonderful things he did other than converting people to Christianity?

Yeah, that’s why Jesus asked everybody at the sermon on the mount to hurry up and donate today. Because St. Thomas Aquinas confused “eye of the needle” with “a small door in the city walls.”

Or maybe people make BANK off of “ministering.”

What’s the misinterpretation of “man cannot serve both God and money?”

Or

“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.”

The translation is actually “go on TV and ask poor people to give donations so you can build big ass churches and fly private and live super comfortably, cuz you’re a minister.”

saphojunkie 02-21-2018 01:41 PM

Jesus was very very clear on money, and it wasn’t for net worth. It was for helping the sick, the pooor, the disenfranchised, the imprisoned. It wasn’t for crystal palaces.

redfan 02-21-2018 01:47 PM

I wonder why he felt the need to lie about what he said/thought about Jews. He only owned up to it when the tapes came out. That's sort of the opposite of what I'd expect a person like Graham to do.

That's an awfully non-christian thing to say. I'm guessing if he's not a crime-lord or another Graham-like religious charlatan, that he pays his fair share of taxes; something Billy gleefully chose not to do in his lifetime.

I disagree with your assessment; I've made an honest living providing strangers with useful services for the better part of my life.

I haven't conned poor people into agreeing with my fantasy beliefs so I make 25 million dollars off them, and not pay a dime towards the tax system that a Hy Vee cashier contributes to on her first day of minimum wage.

I think Billy Graham was basically a good man, and was a sinner as we all are. But his kids basically took over his ministry and are the ones who made the mega-bucks.

Graham's more like the Joe Paterno of large scale religious swindling, whereas Olsteen is the full on Sandusky.

Billy wasn't about to speak up and prevent his flock from raking in every last penny their tax free status afforded them; but, he wasn't directly doing the dirty deeds himself.

I'm guessing you don't know how the American tax system works? If somebody works that first day of minimum wage, they are getting 100% of what they pay in back. Unless they work a crap load of hours.

Seems to me your hatred is misguided. You should be angered at the American tax system, not somebody who played the game according to the rules IMO
