Death Stranding

If you havent seen this game yet, its the first independently developed Hideo Kojima game (metal gear solids). Teamed up with Norman Reedus.

World premiere trailer last night and... I dont know I feel like I have lost my mind just watching it. Watch the entire thing, you will not regret it. Can anyone tell me WHAT THE ****??

When I watched that, my brain melted. So friggin weird. Could be good though.

WTF?

So Daryl is pregnant and humanity's last hope for a child in a world overrun by demons, essentially?

Taking hallucinogens while playing this game should be mandatory, lol.

I've read that this game will attempt a completely different twist on video game death...

Quote:

“Games started over 40 years ago with arcades. When the player dies, it’s game over. You continue, and time goes back to before you die. You can die as many times as you want, but you always go back to a little bit before you die. That was a mechanic made specifically for putting in coins, and it hasn’t changed since then.

As Kojima spoke of the way a vast majority of games treat the concepts of life, death, and mortality, it was clear that Death Stranding was aiming to eschew this tradition. “One of the themes of this game is life and death. So I want people to realize that when they die in the game, that isn’t the end.”

Partway through the latest clip from Death Stranding, Sam (played by Norman Reedus) watches as an explosion engulfs the giant, Lovecraftian-kaiju that projects through the fog. Suddenly we see an upside-down world submerged in water, where Sam exists among the flotsam and jetsam of the universe around him.

From the sound of it, this is where Sam, and the player, go every time they die. But don’t make the mistake of calling this “game over.” When you die in Death Stranding, you’re transported to this purgatory, where you’re free to explore in first-person. Because of some mysterious “unique” abilities Sam possesses, you can wander outside of your body, recovering items among other things. As Kojima explains, “At that point, you’re not dead or alive. It’s the equivalent of that screen that says ‘Continue?’ and a counter ticking down towards zero.”

From what Kojima told us, here's how it sounds -- when you’re ready to return to the world of the living, you can get back into your body. However, unlike most games which set you back to a point before you died, Death Stranding acknowledges your defeat, and seems to even embrace it. You’re transported back to the world after your death -- like in Dark Souls or roguelikes -- where your actions maintain an aura of persistence. The mechanic of “dying” is ubiquitous in video games, but it sounds as though Kojima is implementing systems inspired by purgatory and reincarnation as well.

"So as you saw in the trailer, you saw the crater, and when you come back, it’s still there. Most games would’ve taken you back to before the crater was made. So depending on the player, you might have a lot of craters all over the place -- depends on each player."

“Death will never pull you out of the game,” Kojima firmly stated.

Pretentious much? Kojima has great ideas and his fox engine is awesome. However, this will end up being a hot mess of a 3rd person shooter that confuses the shit out of people.

cooper barrett 12-13-2017 02:50 AM

Where does that go to....., Holy ***

I watched this one thinking it was going to be the same...

That's about the craziest shit I've ever seen.

Hell of a cast, though.

bowener 07-24-2018 08:51 AM

This game may end up being nonsensical, but I think we are missing what it really is. It is possibly the start of A-list talent taking video games series. I was so stoked when Kojima and Del Toro teamed up for a hot second. I would love to see big name directors step into the gaming world to tell their stories and show their art. It might be the future of the Auteur. A place where they can be given complete control over a project start to finish.

Fish 05-29-2019 01:34 PM

Well at least they explained everything.....

Jerm 05-29-2019 02:13 PM

I cannot believe I've pre-ordered this game and will play it in 2019...

A ton of people thought we wouldn't get it until 2021 or 2022, craziness.

I'm super excited...love that we've had all these trailers and still no so little about it. Not enough mystery in games anymore.

Indian Chief 05-29-2019 02:17 PM

I currently have it on pre-order but I might cancel and wait for some reviews. I believe it will be good but man is that trailer convoluted.

Bump 05-29-2019 02:30 PM

I might be interested. I'm curious to what the online component is all about. It's rare to find a AAA game do something different than the same old same old so I'm gonna mark it down as a probably.

ShiftyEyedWaterboy 05-30-2019 11:10 AM

I'm so pumped for this. Looks so different. Love the cosmic horror vibes. Can't wait

What in the actual ****

The animation of the actors is amazing. There is no way I won't be buying this if it ever becomes available for the Xbox, lol.

Bowser 09-25-2019 09:13 PM

Just in case you've forgotten about this one coming out in a couple of months....

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rwXat47w2Eg" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Bump 09-25-2019 09:36 PM

This is now a definite buy for me. The only game I'll even buy for the foreseeable future, until something else intrigues me.

The online component might put this game over the top, if it's like how I think it's going to be (player hotspots, player made bridges, landmarks and shit like that, that's the kind of shit I like in a game).

TinyEvel 09-26-2019 12:00 PM

We have a 1981 Ms. Pacman cocktail table game in our house. I think I might just plug that in and wait for it to hum to life after months and just play that. Maybe even get up to the banana level.

ShiftyEyedWaterboy 11-04-2019 10:29 PM

Just a few days away. Reviews are all over the place. From "absolute masterpiece" to "like eating 60 pounds of vegetables at gunpoint." I'm looking forward to it.

This is pretty damn good.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/KXf9O0OWe54" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

lcarus 11-05-2019 05:42 PM

Heard this was a chore to play. Looks interesting though. I'll probably wait and get it when it's a free PSN game or it goes on sale for really cheap. Hell I do that with almost every game now. The only game I've bought on day one in recent years is Resident Evil 2 remake.

Bump 11-06-2019 01:52 AM

Probably gonna wait for a sale or when I'm not too busy to play this.

Bowser 11-14-2019 02:55 PM

I love Razorfist but disagree here. I’ve watched about 2 hours of gameplay and can’t wait to play it. It’s an original idea, looks beautiful, and due to the interactive nature the longer you wait to play the better off you are.

I'm having a damn blast. This is the most I've been addicted to a game in a long time. Gameplay mechanics are super fun, the community aspect is awesome, story is weird as hell. I think Kojima did a crappy job of marketing this game. They should've shown off a little more. Not boring at all. It really opens up in Episode 3.

Jerm 12-01-2019 01:26 AM

So I have got around to starting this tonight finally....I kept an open mind throughout the review embargo, listening to Giant Bomb, and on. I was always going to play it and I'm glad I'm did because HOLY SHIT I LOVE THIS GAME.

Granted I'm only about 7ish hrs in (in chapter 3) but I keep hearing this is the "slog" part of the game and it only gets better...if that's the case, this will easily be my GOTY because I already love what I've played.

Really digging the story so far and how bizarre and batshit it is lol...the lore is awesome and I really dig the characters so far.

The social/multiplayer aspect of this game is one of the most ingenious things I've seen in a game...super clever and I love it totally ties into the story and is an integral part of the game.

Can't wait to get back to it!

ROFL Getting there...

Mecca 12-02-2019 10:28 AM

This is a game I'd play but I don't want to pay 60 bucks for it...

I waited forever on RE2 remake and got it for 15.

TambaBerry 12-02-2019 06:57 PM

looks like a walking simulator to me

Otter 12-03-2019 07:12 AM

Looks like an 8min preview to a David Lynch movie.

Mecca 12-17-2019 03:23 PM

This game is 35 bucks on Amazon right now if anyone wanted to get it cheaper.

TinyEvel 12-28-2019 03:42 PM

I’m interested to get this game but those who’ve played it— what games would you compare it to in terms of story and gameplay? Is it an rpg? Shooter? Etc.

It's difficult to put in a category. The closest thing is the Metal Gear games except you're building objects to help traverse a giant obstacle course. I wouldn't really call it a shooter. There's action but there's more of an emphasis on stealth.

The story is some crazy David Lynch cosmic horror stuff. Hard to classify, as well. I was a little hesitant going in but ended up loving it.
