-- Let's discuss your favorite fast food french fries

Talk to us about your favorite fast food french fries. I'm okay with Applebee tier fries as well.

For me i'd say it's still McDonalds. Honestly not many just blow me away. I like a steak fry type, I'd say.

But flavor I still give to McDonalds.

Curly fries. All day every day.

Rain Man 09-20-2017 06:43 PM

I like the thinner ones more than the thicker ones. I'm glad you said McDonald's, because they are the best in the fast food world.

Well, there's Chick Fil A, of course. Their waffle fries are awesome, in part because they hold their ketchup so well. Chick Fil A may be the winner the more I think about it.

heat retention is for crap though - but while fresh and salted - they're top shelf.

MVChiefFan 09-20-2017 06:47 PM

I'm not sure about favorite, but my LEAST favorite is Burger King. Those things suck ass! Maybe Five Guys or Wing Stop.

Five Guys as a fresh potatoe is put throught the cutter when you order

I swear they add some sugar to their salt. Probably why they're so addictive.

ThaVirus 09-20-2017 06:51 PM

Assuming maximum heat and freshness, McDonald's probably.

I think Tiny Evel either owned one or stock there - or just swore by them - I think it was him - him or another poster here on CP.

Frazod 09-20-2017 06:56 PM

When it comes to actual fast food, Checkers. Their seasoned fries are the shit.

As someone said in the Steak and Shake thread, though, Red Robin's steak fries are awesome. But I don't consider that fast food.

yeah it was Baby Lee and I HAVE actually had them - they're steak fries w/ grooves in them IIRC - Mine had traveled about 30 mins - as did my burger from RR - so I can't critique them until I've sat down in there and plowed a burger and fries, live.

Agreed on Red Robbin fries. Not fast food but worth the mention.

Next to some great beer battered fries, the RR fries are so ****ing good.

TimBone 09-20-2017 07:01 PM

I'm one of those weird people that like only super crispy fries or soggy fries.

Normal cooked fries do nothing for me. So my opinion in this thread is probably worthless.

Simply Red 09-20-2017 07:02 PM

I do like Checkers fries as well Frazod - but their burgers seem to have fallen off the tasty charts. Not NEARLY as tasty as they once were.

Easy 6 09-20-2017 07:03 PM

Every foodie article I've ever read always says McDonalds, and while they're ok they're not my favorite

I prefer a thicker cut fry, Wendys or even Burger King for example... but the bottom line is just about any fry is good when fresh from the fryer

I'm like this with onions. Either kill them or don't cook them at all. For example - I can't handle onions atop a pizza.

Oh wait...yes, I do love Chick fil a waffle fries. They are good. Except when you get that thick pics from the top or bottom of the potato, that is so much thicker than the other pieces that its more like a mini baked potato bite than a waffle fry.

Of the major chains I prefer Wendy's overall, but their fries tend to be a touch under cooked.

I do really like Arby's curly fries.

This dude will regret the white shirt and buff wings. I have a wingstop and wings and things near. The fries are great at the stop buy but you need a bib and a shower for there wings.

Hoover 09-20-2017 07:21 PM

I'm a fan of the Culvers krinkel cut fry, but yeah McDonalds are money

srvy 09-20-2017 07:22 PM

I dont get the love that Mcdonalds get for the fries. They get cold fast and taste nasty then.

Honestly I am not a big fry fan but if they got them I always favor crinkle fries and steak fries a close second.

Let us agree on the absolute worst fries in fast food... Long John Silvers

They seem to switch them up every year or so trying to fix it, but they never fail to fail... its always a soggy, under cooked mess

srvy 09-20-2017 07:27 PM

Any oldtimers remember Grifs? I always remember the fries shoestring cruchy salty golden and hot.

So true and Captain D no better. I wish Arthur Treacher was still in KC they did fish and chip properly.

Yep. I do love their fish and chicken, slathered in malt vinegar. But I never eat the fries.

They seem to be dying in this area, though. There's only one left that's even remotely close to me. Which is probably a good thing, because holy shit that stuff is horribly unhealthy. Once or twice a year as a guilty pleasure meal is more than enough.

Their fries are shit - I think i use tartar to help with them - yes they're not good for you - does anyone remember that yellow pineapple sauce at Cptn D's? It had little bits of pineapple in it - the chick strips worked so well with it.

ONLY malt vinegar. :harumph:

I've never had a genuine WC burger, but have to admit that I can flat out murder a whole box of their frozen variety

Frazod 09-20-2017 07:58 PM

I hate onions, so I've never even set foot inside a White Castle.

Their frozen chicken sandwiches are pretty good, though.

listopencil 09-20-2017 08:05 PM

If you live near an Arby's that is run well their curly fries beat McD's. Also Rally's (if you can find one) battered french fries beat McD's. Looking them up just now Checkers and Rally's are the same company, so I would imagine that the fries are the same.

I tend to make a once per year trip to LJS. I think of it like an oil change. Also; malt vinegar and ketchup for me. And I can't refuse a hush puppy. It's just not who I am.

McDonalds for me.

Steak fries are a risk as they can end to being under-cooked. As Frazod highlighted earlier.

McDonals fries. Whataburger fries are pretty good as well.

Try cooking them at home. Bake them on a cookie sheet until the inside is done and then pan fry them in olive oil to crisp the outside.

5 Guys are always good.

Best fast food I've ever had. Period.

Amazing quality, consistently great service, and their fries are a very close second to McD's. I've never had a bad experience there, ever.

I could easily eat lunch there every day.

Bojangles seasoned fries.
Five Guys cajun fries.

Baby Lee 09-20-2017 10:49 PM

Outside Red Robin steak fries and Rallys/Checkers seasoned fries, I'm more concerned with quality dipping sauces.

I'm not a big fan of ketchup on fries [even though I love it fine on hash browns or home fries at breakfast. Go figure], so I want a good honey mustard or chipotle sauce.

For example, Culvers fries are objectively your basic Ore-Ida frozen aisle crinkle fries. But you always get them fresh, and their honey mustard is on point.

Burger King does go a tad overboard with their 'crisp enhancer' coating, to where it's more of a potato product than a fry. To be fair, they're like Rallys seasoned fries without the seasoning.

One that goes unnoticed is Penn Station. They slice the fries from whole potatoes and fry them up right in front of you while they make your sub. Nothing remarkable, except the transparency of fresh ingredients.

Least favorite I know will be an unpopular choice. I don't know what it is about Arby's curly fries. I can watch them come out of the fryer onto my tray and before I sit down they are cold. They ought to use them to insulate the space shuttle for their heat shedding properties.

scho63 09-20-2017 10:51 PM

RED ROBIN!

TribalElder 09-20-2017 11:02 PM

MC Ds are pretty solid when fresh
KC joes are great

Red Robin & gates steak fries are good when fresh

I've always thought 5 guys frys were aids and all around soggy awful

Steak and shake shoestring fries are meh

Arby's curly fries are good sometimes

Chic fil a waffle fries are good

Typically I skip the fries at most locations unless it's paired with what I ordered without much option to change (beef on bun with fries etc)

That's the original Runza. There's numerous variations, Italian Runza, Swiss Cheese Mushroom Runza, Spicy Jack Runza, etc. I'd recommend the Spicy Jack but you can't really go wrong with any of them. They have great burgers too.

Bowser 09-20-2017 11:51 PM

Five Guys and Wing Stop's fries are really similar, but Wing Stop salts the shit out of theirs. Still love them. I have always liked KFC's wedges and Church's crinkle cut fries, too.

Locally here in KC, 54th Street has an appetizer called Fry Me to the Moon. It comes with a really freaking yummy chipotle ranch dipping sauce, and the stuff is like crack.

I don't believe this is true. I've never seen any store cut when you order.

They ARE cut daily, but a fresh cut potato wouldn't fry well. It needs a water soak to remove some of the starch.

Every Five Guys I've ever been to has their cut potatoes hanging out in a bucket of ice water.

Fire Me Boy! 09-21-2017 07:28 AM

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I really like Steak & Shake's shoestring fries. Smashburger's are very similar.

McDonald's fries are just about the only thing there I enjoy.

Wendy's were good until they went the "natural" route a few years ago.

Arby's curly fries are pretty great.

Five Guys are excellent if you order them "well done."
