If I had an old ass computer

Say I had an old ass computer with windows 7 and put in a grafics carNvidia GT 730 Graphics card. Would it work? I like playing older games just thought about buying this shit card for 10 bucks off of craigslist

jd1020 06-07-2017 12:55 AM

Personally I think those extremely low end piece of shit cards are a waste of money. Sometimes you are better off just using the integrated graphics on your CPU.

It really depends on the games and how old is old, but I can't imagine you couldn't find a good deal on a used couple generation old mid tier card.

Demonpenz 06-07-2017 01:04 AM

It is windows 7 can't remember the speed the game I want to run is Rfactor. That game was released in 07. I just wanted to see if it would work on my computer

jd1020 06-07-2017 01:28 AM

It being windows 7 is irrelevant. That game is compatible all the way back to Windows 98 and a GT 730 more than covers the "recommended" GPU requirements. The 730 doesn't require any external power to run so it's basically if you have an open PCIe lane to plug it in. I just don't think it's a worth while purchase, but it will work.

hometeam 06-07-2017 07:16 AM

Depends on the other components of the old ass PC.

You can have win 7 on an original pentium, an not be able to run dick, or it could be something like a q6600 where you could run that game pretty well~ Or even a gen 1 i3 or i5 and run it pretty well. Hard to tell.

They are a hell of a lot better than the 730 but they also require more power to run which means you'd need to make sure that the power supply in your computer can handle it.

But really there's not much anyone can give advice on in regards to your situation because all we are working with is "It has windows 7."

It would help if you could take a screenshot of your system information that shows your CPU and RAM by going to control panel > system and security > system. Or you could download a program called CPU-Z and posting screenshots of the various tabs particularly "CPU", "Mainboard", and "Memory".

RobBlake 06-07-2017 12:12 PM

i know little in depth about computers.. but i'm pretty sure you want your mainboard/processor/ram to be compatible with the card.

There are no compatibility issues with ram and gpu, there is no relation between the two. Dedicated gpu's have their own onboard memory.

Really the only thing to consider is your cpu and psu. The motherboards only requirement is at least one PCIe x16 slot which all modern motherboards have, if there's one out there that doesn't I haven't seen it.

This. Plus you may need to flash a bios update powered via a molex connection to ensure the porn drive is stable.

BigRichard 06-07-2017 01:04 PM

Hey Penz, do you know what your mother board is? Or maybe just the model and type of computer if you know that. If not can you go here (https://www.belarc.com/products_belarc_advisor) and download Belarc and run it and post either a screen shot of the information or copy and paste the data. That might give me a little more information to work off of. I haven't ran that in a while but it might also display keys for some software. I don't remember if it does or not.
You may want to blank that out if it does. Is your computer a tower? Have you ever done anything like taking out motherboards or anything like that?

An old ass computer running Win7 could very well have an AGP port or normal PCI port.

Possibly, but given the conversation I'm working under the assumption that old ass defines a computer that came with Windows 7 pre installed which would mean the components inside are way beyond the AGP days.

Hey penz... If you need a barebones PC, or some parts, I'd be happy to help you out. I don't think I have any spare GPU cards worth a crap. But I've got lots of other parts to help you put together a decent gaming PC. Let me know, I'll get you gaming at some level at least.

Demonpenz 06-08-2017 11:51 AM

Sounds good. I have a bunch of old computers. I am looking to get something in the 600 dollar range for gaming at the first of the year with my tax returns or other money. I am just trying to keep my spirits up while I am working through this year. I have installed ram grafix cards and such. Nothing like a mother board though.

Demonpenz 06-08-2017 11:53 AM

I saw one computer on craigslist that felt like a good deal to me I will have to post it if I can find it.

I didn't see your RAM listed there. Do you know how much RAM you have?

Without seeing much more you could probably update your processor dirt cheap to something like an intel pentium 4. Here is a used one on Ebay for $9 https://www.ebay.com/i/191689165644?chn=ps&dispItem=1. Someone on here probably has one lying around. I think I used to but got rid of bunch of my parts recently.

Update your RAM to get it up to 8GB for probably around $25 bucks. Then buy a cheap card. You wouldn't have a to bad of machine for around $50. If someone has some parts for you around here you could get by a lot cheaper. Fish said he has some parts so maybe he has some he could give you. I will look when I get home but I am thinking I got rid of most of everything I had.

I was just going to see if there was a decent used card on craigslist in your area.

I am also going to check with a couple of friends for some of the other parts. I might be even able to dig something up here at work.

Demonpenz 06-08-2017 01:18 PM

Sounds good thanks

BigRichard 06-08-2017 01:38 PM

This is a little older post but if he still has it that isn't to bad of a price for that card. I don't know how much you are willing to go though and if you actually need that much of a card. Would you like to play some newer games if you can?

https://kansascity.craigslist.org/sop/6122623080.html

I would like for some other people to chime in to agree or disagree though. I may be sending you down the wrong path. But I think that if you can get a processor and possibly the ram from someone on here and get a card like that you could play some pretty decent games.

jd1020 06-08-2017 01:43 PM

There's no way I would pay $70 for an 8 year old card.

You could buy a GTX 770 for that price on ebay.

I had not seen them that cheap on ebay but looking again I see one for $85+$12 shipping. Most the other are going for $100 or more. I suspect you might be able to find one a little cheaper if you wait and watch. So yes, that would be better but it is all what he can afford and needs. He would probably be able to get that other card cheaper as well if the guy still has it. Probably get it for $40 or $50.

Demonpenz 06-08-2017 01:55 PM

Yeah I am open to anything. Just not over 200 or so because the start of the year i an getting a new one.

We need to know what kind of power your PSU can supply before we can direct you to a graphics card. Otherwise my advice would be to get an nvidia card in the x50 or lower range since those can be powered just through the PCIe slot.

Good call... wasn't thinking about his power supply.

Demonpenz 06-08-2017 04:53 PM

so what is a card that is less than x50 what does x50 even mean? I will check out my power supply when i get home.

jd1020 06-08-2017 05:05 PM

X refers to a number. So 1050, 950, 750, etc... There are also some AMD cards that don't require external power as well but i haven't really kept up on AMD products since they've been uncompetitive for so long.

That's a 250W power supply. Which is OK for a system without much power needs. If you get a decent video card, you'll likely need one with a higher output than 250W.

OK penz, I'm in the process of putting together a little Core i5 3470 system for you. Nothing fancy, but should let you game about anything current after adjusting video settings. I'm only needing to purchase the GPU and PSU. I've priced a 500W generic power supply at Microcenter along with a GT 710 GPU for about $75. I'm willing to gift this to you, with the expectation of you providing a few entertaining Youtube videos of your future ass kicking PC game adventures. Maybe some MS Paint uploads. I appreciate your antics over the years, and am happy to contribute.

Dell Optiplex 7010 base. I have a spare 21" or 22" DVI monitor to donate as well. I think. I'll have to check. Already have a 1TB SATA HD. No spare SSD, sorry. I think I've found 16GB RAM too.

I went to Microcenter to pick up the PS and GPU today, but their ****ing POS system was down and they were only accepting cash. It will likely be after the J4th holiday, but I'll contact you to come pick everything up when it's ready.

Cheers, bud.

I would be willing to chip in a few bucks if you want. I used to have tons of spare parts but got rid of a ton and don't work in the repair department at work anymore so don't have access to all the stuff I used to. I also installed KODI for you, and configured it with the most recent plugins(Elysium, Exodus, SportsDevil). Recent Movies and TV, all available for you, just double click the link on the desktop...

You also have the ability to use multiple monitors if you have that available. I'm providing a 22" monitor connected via DVI. But you could also connect another or two of your own. The video card has a spare HDMI and VGA connection available. You could even connect it directly to your bigscreen TV if you'd like. The motherboard also has 2 separate Displayport connections to attach monitors as well. Theoretically you could connect 4 displays.. maybe.. You'd need Displayport adaptors for that though..

Probably not installing the demo versions of these following games for you to "test"...

Mass Effect 3
Mass Effect 4: Andromeda
Dark Souls 3
Dying Light
Far Cry 4
Shadow of Mordor
Skyrim
Wolfenstein: The New Order
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Even if I did, I would of course expect you to eventually pay for the titles you play once you can. If that were even possible, as they probably don't even have demos available for those games.... Who knows.... we'll see............

Damn I am blown away at the generosity I would need a wifi net card. I am trying to decide how to pay this forward to keep the giving going. From the first post about it just the thought that someone would give me something felt good. Thanks again.

Wifi card installed.

Yeah, just pay it forward, bud. That's all I ask. In whatever way you're able, when you can make a difference.

I'm afraid I'm officially on vacation as of today though. Meaning I might not be able to meet up with you for another week or so, depending on how my vacation plans play out. I may be able to meet up sometime next week, but no promises, as my vacation plans have already needed to be drastically changed. Sorry to delay delivery after completion, but I've had vacation planned much longer than your upgrade.

Here's a temporary teaser for you at least...

Piss off. I don't need your rep or your quotes. You're a dimwit.
