Looks pretty good. |
Yeah, that looks good.
|
I remember watching the original mini-series in 1980. it was re-aired in '90 IIRC. I then went and got the book and finished it in 2 weeks. that was my first novel that I read that wasn't from the kids/YA section.
Cosmo Jarvis is playing Blackthorne. he looks like a landlubber. |
This looks good. I can't wait.:thumb:
|
Oh yeah, I'll be all over this! I read the book and it was awesome then the mini series came out and it didn't disappoint. This should be fire with all they can do now. February can't come fast enough.
|
Bad ass
|
I will deficiently watch this. Looks good. Not sure of that main leaders real name but he always plays roles where he is not the lead but I have always liked him in other movies. Believe he was in The Last Samauri and 47 Ronin just to name a couple. Looks like maybe he will be the lead here.
|
Looks good for sure, but always skeptical of FX. Their shows are usually hit or miss.

Who Would Win in a Fight Between Sho’nuff “The Shogun of Harlem” and Mike Tyson?

in Shogun, he plays Toranaga. His historical counterpart is Tokugawa. Cosmo Jarvis is most likely the lead, Blackthorne. |
I need to read it first, I've always wanted to but every time I start I get distracted.
Have any of you ever read Aztec by Gary Jennings? It's similar historical fiction, but takes place right before Cortez lands on the Yucatan, it follows the story of an Aztec man. It's a huge book but it spends a ton of time exploring Aztec culture. I don't think they could make a show about it though. |
First episode is tonight.

Thought the first two episodes were pretty good. The actor playing Yabushige was great as a slimy ladder climber. A few ahistorical things but mostly in the background ie people sitting seiza style when they shouldn't be at that time.
They kind of ruined the 'unless I win' moment though. |
I like it so far. I guess their only going to show one episode a week.
|
I like what theyve done so far. Shannon Goss has done well rewriting Shogun for TV. The original Shogun mini series didn't mention the Taiko. the suit of armor shown in episode 2 is historically accurate to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Taiko.
https://samuraistore.com/cdn/shop/pr...g?v=1649759358 The taiko was a peasant from birth but became a general under Oda. Oda was the most aggressive and successful samurai clan. when Oda Nobunaga died, Hideyoshi continued to consolidate power by conquering provincial rulers. Once he had unified Japan he started a campaign to capture Korea. the campaign lasted too long for Hideyoshi to finish. the Taiko could never be SHogun because of his caste. but he married into a samurai family and thus his heir would be eligible. Ishido and Toronaga (Ishida and Tokugawa) both need to muster entire armies for a war that needs to conclude before the Taikos hier becomes an adult. |

I'm so glad they rewrote this piece of shit scene |
I generally liked the 1980 mini series. But this one is sooooo much better.
|
This has been excellent.
|
I don't think they were filming on location. The main audience chamber looks like a room from Nijo Jyo palace. Of course they used modern day Osaka castle and edited out the fence from the very top.

FX has an absolute banger on their hands with this one.
This show looks like it would be on HBO. |
Quote:
Will be interested to see if they try to carry it on into a second season because of that (although it would have to be without the source material and we've seen how badly shows can drop off without the source material to fall back on). |
I'm through episode 3 and I'm all in. I think there is still room for falling on it's face, because we're still pulling on the mystery of it all, but it's got it's hooks into me.

if they wanted to continue making these, they could make a sequel of the Gai-jin novel. |

Tonight's episode was fire

However they bought the rights to the Asian Saga so I'd expect Tai-Pan next. |
That was quite bloody for cable tv.

Shogun and Tokyo Vice are two of the best shows on TV

****ing love this show. So so good
|
I will say that since we don't get the characters inner thoughts that this version of the story is a lot more subtle than the book. Except for Yabushige, that actor is really expressive and you almost don't need subtitles to get what he is saying and feeling.

Binge watching this today, starting episode 3 now
You guys ain't lying either, this is definitely HBO level television |

I've been watching these on-demand, but which night of the week does it actually air?
edit* Never mind, I'll be there on wednesday nights from here on out... this is the kind of appointment tv cable subscribers have been badly needing since Yellowstones ugly demise |

But yeah loving this show, in a word its immersive |

If they wanted to keep the same actors, they would probably adapt Gai-Jin next. Tai-pan and Noble House deal with Hong Kong. Whirlwind deals with Iran and King Rat would have mostly English and American actors.

wardrobe for this show is world class. https://i.ibb.co/gmy0bqc/yabus-armou...6zze2rmc1.webp Yabu is wearing a Gorilla themed helmet (I hope we get to see him wear the mask too) and has a dragon embossed bronze breast plate. looks amazing its very stylized and individualistic but maintains accuracy to the time period https://i.ibb.co/nDQSLcL/800px.jpg old-man-in-a-bathhouse themed armor . |
|
Watched E1 last night; with my mom and she like it a lot. My dad taught her some Japanese when they were in med school, so she kept explaining what they were saying. Didn't want to burst her bubble and tell her I could read the subtitles, lol.

That landslide / liquefaction was HORRIFYING

Buntaro is going to try and screw them all over, he feels betrayed by Toranaga after almost giving his life for him
|
I think we should leave book spoilers out until the series is finished. They have changed some things around though and dropped a plot line so far I think.
|
I really liked the first episode too. Looks like a great series
|

Did I inadvertently spoil the plot? Haven't read the book so I have no idea, was just guessing at it... |

Just finished E2. I know, way behind. But just wanted to come in here and say this is amazing so far. The writing, cinematography, acting, everything.
|
It's like some of you have never read the books. :)
And yeah they switch some things around and dropped a few things. You're learning stuff that is revealed later but overall this is excellent. Probably the most disappointing thing is, and you're starting to see change, but the Anjin isn't so hostile. |
Anyone else ready for a trip to Willow World?

The house wives are all finer than Lady Kiku. Mariko, Ochiba, and Anjins consort

Lady Kiku actress

I stand by my statement. Fuji with minimal makeup looks better than Kiku wearing whiteface. Kiku wearing contemporary makeup is another story entirely.
|
I've been busy so I got behind, but goddamn this is good. Bit of a slow burn, but I imagine when shit hits the fan, it will be wild.
|
does anyone know the name of the tool that Anjin uses to aim the cannon @1:30 - 1:34? I think it is a navigational plotter tool with a protractor but I have no idea

Maybe it was something similar to an inclinometer.
|
The main reason that artillery was so devastating was the bore was loaded with chain shot.
Normally used by the British Navy to knock down ships' masts. I guess Anjin is holding one ready to load it in that scene https://image.invaluable.com/housePh...-L14060963.jpg https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/i...06a48af3a3.jpg https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/pi...20130627223421 |
Just on the cable side of nudity and gore.
|
Sheesh, rough way to go out. Fitting for that character though.
|
Things are reeeally heating up, gonna be interesting to see how they get out of this tight spot... but however they do it, it seems like Lady Kiku will have something to do with it
|
I wasn't a fan of deviating from the story/book that much but social media is all in a hoot about it
|
Man. That head crunching scene is the most believable head crunch I've seen. That was really good. I was almost proud of the kid. Until he yeeted himself out of this life.
|
Episode 7 is a bunch of b******* none of that s*** happened in the book. The Anjin isn't an a****** like that. Toronaga's son doesn't die like that. It's not even as oldest as son. They kind of f*** this up

Clavell himself took liberties with the true story behind Toranaga's character |
