Unique Military Weapons
Cant recall ever seeing a thread on this topic so i thought it was time we had one... this thread is dedicated to military weaponry of any kind, from any era or nation.
There is a seemingly endless array of novel, fascinating, revolutionary or even ill-fated hardware out there so subject material shouldnt be a problem. First entry coming up shortly... |

Cant believe that with all of the WWII books i've read and documentaries i've watched, that i'd never heard of this until a few days ago... a Japanese super submarine that carried and launched aircraft like a surface ship, the I 400 series.
Such a killer idea for those times, a real technical achievement that could've been extremely hard to deal with had it been invented sooner, luckily it never made it into action because it was designed primarily to strike at American cities on the coasts. It was a real piece of work, but its idea was usurped by the advent of missile technology that was much cheaper and easier to platform on a sub. This is a short computer mockup that shows how it operated... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/7QVMAtcrM08" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This is the full documentary for those inclined... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/j4j3UHvQz_U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Next up, the stuff that really gives me a woody... next generation manned aircraft, as opposed to the super cool but unmanned UCAV stuff.
Call it Aurora or whatever, but i would give a left nut to be privy to some of this, although its quite possible i've seen some variation of it in person and not known it... not long ago i was watching a documentary about lighter than air aviation from a civilian uses perspective and the key ingredient for this was the use of helium. As some of you might remember, i was in the automotive sales business for quite a while, you might also know that almost every car dealership just gets off on plastering their lots with balloons to attract the eye of passers by... well, two years ago helium was taken off the market by the government, its no longer available (much to the chagrin of car dealers). Now think about what that element could do for an aircraft made of super lightweight stealth materials... alloys, composites, polymers etc... think of the ships hull being honeycombed with it for lighter weight yet structural rigidity... Now imagine tanks of helium inside that can disperse within the craft for flight and then be sucked back into the tanks for landings and other maneuvers... then throw in the zero point propulsion systems that we surely have by now but havent advertised. Such a craft would be unbelieveably fast and maneuverable... laugh if you must, thats okay, but i bet if we could see what the various skunkworks have right now, our collective jaws would smash into the ground. Heres a short clip full of possibility... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/CZl0ck4q7bw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Ah yes, i remember seeing something about this years ago, but there were severe problems with it that killed the idea... i'm thinking melting was the problem, lets see...

I forget the name of the show because it was so short lived, but Spike did a show with Richard Mackowicz (sp?) the ex-SEAL, where special-ops units from various nations would compete against each other taking down various targets, it was very cool to see the (not real units, but thrown together for tv) individuals and their varying tactics. If i had to guess why its not still on, i wouldnt guess lack of viewers, its that the military didnt want enemies seeing strengths and weaknesses played out on live tv. |

How about this, invisibility cloak in action or "frame lag"?... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/7zKQe-1BUFQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> ed- not sure why it wont load, but it appears to show a soldier appear out of nowhere and climb onto an Abrams in the middle east during a firefight. |

Thats pretty badass, Bowser, has some real range to it at 800 meters, love the way the spokesman put "it basically creates a one man mortar team".
Going to the live fire 203 range was the always the single most fun thing i did in the army. |

"Bat Bombs"... that one was a real doozy, good call... filed under "ill fated".
That idea smelled of true desperation, if it could've saved japan from the nuke it would've been great... but such is life. |
Where is Donger? what about you Cheater 5?
Thought for sure i'd get an interesting entry from them... With that query, to the high seas we go, never seen this one before, pretty damn cool looking... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/GpUfZvzH2Xc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Guess we dropped one of these on a tank column that came charging out of Bagdad. When the back half of the column saw what happened to the front half they decided surrender sounded like a good idea.

That bottom ship is even more futuristic looking, but its no bigger than a coastal patrol boat.
I've read stuff here and there saying the Navy isnt sure whether or not these newer designs are worth the money, that they might stand pat with the few already built. |

So lets start back with THAAD, its hard to fathom the extreme accuracy involved in trusting a kinetic weapon to take out a missile Why would you not want an explosive warhead for insurance, proximity fused to go off if its going to be a near miss etc? With all of the problems involved in creating the latest missiles for various platforms and their accuracy/reliability that I read about... its just difficult to understand how THAAD can be trusted to be so accurate Someone help me understand here Now to another interest... I am totally fascinated with our various stealth aircraft craft and the technology they employ So anyway, it appears that certain nations like Australia are looking for cost effective alternative/complementary pieces for the F-35 and are rebuilding and retrofitting the old but legendary and still quite viable F-15 airframe into stealthy assets Notice the body reframing, matte finish of stealth coatings and recessed bomb bay of the Silent Eagle... https://www.google.com/search?q=f-15...y67GXXaOaGM%3A https://www.google.com/search?q=f-15...H2IQOgqN9NM%3A And while there isnt a single link I can find to prove it, it sure looks like the F-16 on the left, the prettiest little warbird ever created IMO, the Porsche roadster of fighter jets has gotten the same stealthy treatment You can ditch the fuel pods on the wings of the 15-16 too, look how sleek and radar evasive they would be without those http://www.janes.com/article/63090/a...cise-concludes |

Japans first indigenously built stealth fighter - gotta say, as 5th gen goes its not a very pretty bird at all, and looks awfully small as well

great, now Japan is trying to corner the market on stealth planes. 20 years from now they'll be a reasonably priced entry stealth plane for air forces on a budget.

To see four of these come in for a landing one right after another on Friday's or take off in the morning in order for training exercises still gives me the chills after 3 years. Our HQ office is at the end of the runway at Andrews Air Force Base just outside the perimeter. They come in and take off super fast. The noise is incredible
