Spags shut down Tom Brady in the Super Bowl.
Good enough for me. |
Paging Dylan.....
|
How the hell does one pronounce his last name?

He runs lots of cover 2 and rushes 4 and lets the qb take the passes underneth. Once the field shortens then his players got less of a run to make a play. With this defense it makes a good fit. We could drop all the secondary to the sticks and not get beat send speaks Houston and Ford to blitz and be good to go. Lets roll

Giants ran a 4-3 IIRC. Is that generally what he is? |
BleedingRexRyan must be so bummed right now

Great, now we get to listen to morons call him Spags for 5 years
|
He's def more of a 4-3 guy but with Suttons whatever the hell defense he ran I don't know how much of a change that would be.
|
He was under Jim Johnson in Philly with Andy.
Makes sense. |
Probably the best we could do unfortunately

no only no, but **** NO

OK.....I can live with that, but to be honest, I rather enjoyed calling Sutton "Buttons".... |
Good news: under Spagn$&$@@, the Giants went from last on defense in 2015 to 10th in 2016.
Bad news: under Spag$&@“$, the Giants went from 10th in defense in 2016 to 31st in 2017. |
Quote:
Yeah look at how ****ing great he has been on defense! |

I think it's underwhelming but I like it better than Rex. If we're playing the excuse game, he doesn't have a bountygate or Ben mcadoo situation to deal with this time. If he can make our defense like the 2016 giants, id take that. One things for sure... Our DB's will not look like doofuses out there and our players will run through brick walls for him.

I'm not sure what a 4-3 is |

When he's had talent he's put good defenses on the field.
Shocking. |

We flat out missed the boat on a handful of awfully impressive possibilities. |
As long as it’s not Bob Sutton. I’m on board.
All we need is a top 18 defense!!!! So far this off-season is off to a GREAT start!! |

If this Spags thing comes to fruition, it makes some of the moves last offseason a little more palatable I guess. |

The most positive thing I can say about this is that Spags will figure out how to use Kpass and Speaks
|
Meh hire if so, a younger version of Sob Buttons it sounds like.

Again, I think it’s funny when people judge a coordinator for better or worse based on talent. You need talent to be good. Spags will have an elite offense to support his philosophy on defense. Aggression... |

Those are his defensive rankings |

Maybe this will be intriguing for Landon Collins????
|
I don't really care about his years with the Rams. That was a ****ing dumpster fire that sucked everyone in.
Again, when he's had talented guys, he's been good. |

We just need shut down corners and amazing pass rush now.... |
He was the DC when the Giants held the 18-0 Patriots to 14 points in the Super Bowl... remember that when you bring up shitty defenses on teams that either sucked or quit on the season.

He’s better than Sutton. I have no doubt about that.

You can put Houston at DE. I also think it's easier to draft and find players for a 43 than a 34. |
Quote:
Switching to a 4-3 does next to nothing to limit the DEs. All it will do is take pass coverage out of the equation for guys like Speaks, Houston, Kpass... guys who don’t belong in coverage. |

From Steve Spagnoulo's Wikipedia page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Spagnuolo Coaching philosophy Spagnuolo learned under Philadelphia coach Jim Johnson, and shares the same aggressive, blitz-heavy approach as his mentor. (He did not incorporate this philosophy during his time in New Orleans however). Spagnuolo uses a 4–3 base defense with a heavy emphasis on multiple blitz packages, including corner and safety blitzes. While defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, he often used a smaller defensive line, with three or even four defensive ends to further pressure the quarterback. This philosophy proved successful, with the Giants leading the NFL in sacks in 2007. In Super Bowl XLII, Spagnuolo's defense sacked Tom Brady five times, which was the most he had been sacked in any game that season. |
Gotta feel for the guy...
Takes DC job then suddenly gets thrown into an interim HC role and has to damage control bountygate. Takes DC job with the giants then deals with one of the most incompetent locker room managers in the game. Possible the guy has just had some really bad breaks. |

I don't know that it's going to be as big of a change as you're making it out to be. |
Quote:
So you are taking 2 of our 3 best pass rushers and putting question marks next to them. |
It definitely makes Speaks and Kpass more of an option than at 34 OLB.
|
I'm just glad we're moving on...

Quote:
I’m on board with Spags, he’s going to convince Collins to join our squad. |
Hitchens might be way better in a 4-3, too, and so would Chris Jones.
You go 4-3 you can probably get away with this year one: DOD Hitchens Rookie/FA Ford Nnadi Jones Houston I actually think DOD would be a stud weakside linebacker. The only big issue here is if Ford can hold up every down as a DE. |
I don't remember but does he run an aggressive blitizing D?
Edit: 88 answered my question, I guess I should looked him up in Wikipedia |

We just upgraded a HUGE position in our coaching department. |
Pretty underwhelming, but at this point there isn't much left. I wish that Reid would have went outside of his circle. His circle has been phenomenal on offense, but defensively not so much.
With that said, it has to be an upgrade, even if it's just because we have a fresh set of eyes, and a slightly different message to the players each day. As others have pointed out, it's not like we need to turn into the Baltimore Ravens to win with this offense. We just need to field a D that is in the middle 15-20 range, and we have a great shot to improve as a team. |

Guy's a JAG.
There might be a marginal upgrade here but this is organizational cowardice; known mediocrity over taking a chance on a guy who actually be a force multplier of some sort. Even money says our defense is again in the bottom 1/3 of the league in most meaningful categories next year. If we're lucky we'll win the next shootout in January but Spags won't do anything to help us avoid it. There's just very little 'there' there. He's sizzle over steak and has been since he was exposed with the Rams. He has 1 halfway decent defense over the last 10 seasons to his credit and a whole bunch of pretty shitty ones. |

It is a MAJOR TRANSITION |
Quote:
Yeah it's almost like they were gearing up for a switch anyway. Speaks and Kpass make zero sense as OLB's in a 3-4. |
Marty says this is as good as done.

Rex Ryan? I don't know how much force multiplier a defensive Coordinator can be. It's such a talent determined position, I dunno. |
