Early reviews state this may be the new Windows Vista.
We will see I suppose. I normally judge for myself. |
I have an older desktop I use a lot and when I updated it to Windows 10, it functions like it's in super slow mode a lot of the time, while other times it's fine in short periods.
I assume it doesn't have enough memory to run Windows 10? |
So it's a mac

8GB should be considered the current absolute minimum for Windows these days. And RAM is cheap... |

Jesus Christ, working in IT this will be a cluster **** with end user complaints |

Regardless, a good rollout should limit the user complaints.. Those complaint service desk calls go into the trash anyway. |

I only use my desktop for surfing the web, my stock screener, some basic work stuff and streaming sports. I don’t play any games. |
* You couldn't pay me enough to support end users. I did it for 3 years after college and I'm still surprised to this day I didn't strangle someone or get fired.
* I'm pretty sure it's possible to limit the amount of memory Chrome or pretty much any browser can use with a little tinkering. It might be adding a user flag to the call in properties > Target Ex: C:\Users\nip\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe --disk-cache-size-35000000 That's obviously not memory but what it would look like. * I could have sworn I read somewhere that Win 10 would be the last roll out and MS would be updating long time. |

Lucky for me I don’t support them, but I do run a MSP. That being said when you go out in the market there are so many legacy systems, I wonder what shit Windows 11 will break. |
Oh god, make it stop...

Chrome is RAM hungry. So are quite a few collaboration tools like WebEx. Of course, MS Office apps like Outlook are resource hungry. I'm getting ready to phase Windows out completely here - I've got my home computing down to where the only devices that need continuous support are the Windows machine and they are simply that much more "hands on" than everything else. |

Upgrading to 16Gb of RAM would make that thing almost like a new computer. The i3 is underpowered but a RAM upgrade would get a lot more life out of it. |

I’ll try to get the model number tonight. |
jesus **** no
windows 10 still has issues sometimes for ****'s sake...constant updates it seems we do not need windows 11 for at least a couple years |
Windows Update is the single biggest problem with Windows. If updates were better, supporting Windows would be SO much easier. I'd say 80% of issues are caused by updates.
|
WTF? I thought Windows 10 was the "last" windows system. Basically, WIndows would now be called...Windows, no more new versions, just updates.
Oy. Well, we'll be staying with Win10 until the NEXT one (Windows 12?) comes out. It seems Windows sucks every other version. I liked NT, ME was shit, XP was good, Vista sucked, Win7 was good, Win8 sucked, and I actually like Win10. I have 12 years to retirement... |

My wife had an older i5 Dell Inspiron with 8 gigs of Ram, which was maxed out, and that thing was so slow I tossed it in the recycle bin after I built my latest PC in April. I can’t even imagine an i3 with 4 gigs of Ram. |

I don't even throw away dead hard drives that were used in my studio, I just keep them in a box in my garage. Disposing of them is not worth the risk, however infinitesimally small. |

I'm so not looking forward to W11, usually every other windows is ok but the in betweens are garbage.
|
There are some major differences for sure, but I have trouble getting too worked up about it. Everyone threw a fit when they dumped the start menu in Windows 8, but these days I barely use it. Moving the icons to the middle is definitely very Mac-like, but I'm sure the point is to reduce the amount of mouse movement, and people will get used to that pretty quickly.
Just in general, though, it's hard to care that much anymore. For most people, your web browser has far more to do with your day-to-day computing experience than your OS does. |

:harumph: And I too remember Microsoft's claim about Windows 10 being the last one. |

I have done some work on the dev preview and it's ok |

Looks like you have 2 slots allowing for a max of 16GB. DDR3 1600 or DDR3 SDRAM but not sure which yet. |

https://www.newegg.com/asus-m11ad-us...82E16883220448 I like that case a lot. 16GB max, 2 slots. You don't need 16 so hopefully you just have one stick of 4 installed so we can just add one more for around $20. https://www.amazon.com/4gb-1600mhz-d...mhz+ddr3+sdram DIMM 240-pin Here's your user manual: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/55...sus-M11ad.html Here's a tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIl6mmosgMc MB pic received. One stick is all you need to add to the open slot. And get a can of air and clean out the dust and dirt in there and everywhere else. It's piled on your processor inside it's cooling fan like a sand dune. That can cause heat issues (probably is), unseating, and a myriad of other issues. The fan might not even be spinning up to max speed with all that Arizona in there and up around the post. Shoot, try that first and see if it improves things. Ideally, you'll want to remove the fan during cleanup. An air compressor works great! MS Edge uses far less RAM too. I've been real happy with Edge. https://media1.tenor.com/images/161d...itemid=9577750 |

I'm going with this one unless anyone else has suggestions? https://www.amazon.com/PC3-12800-DES...3899438&sr=8-3 |
Probably best to see what the specs are for the stick you have to make sure throughput is not compromised and bottlenecking between the two. But I'm fuzzy on that so I'll defer.

I'll wait for tomorrow and anyone else's input here. |

In this case, considering the price and the performance benefit of going from 8GB to 16GB, I would recommend going with 16GB. Either 8GB pair: https://www.amazon.com/PC3-12800-DES...xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== Or 16GB pair: https://www.amazon.com/1600MHz-PC3L-...NsaWNrPXRydWU= |

My wife just said to not be a dumbass and get a 16GB upgrade since it's so cheap.
So I guess that's the decision too. Also, I'll order an anti-static wrist band just to be safe. |

Get a 16GB pair, there's no reason to do anything else. |

But out of all the computers components RAM can take abuse (DONT ACTIVELY ABUSE IT) Also depending on configuration of your unit (1x16gb stick or 2x8gb) if you only have two DIMs it will be easy. If you have 4 you need to make sure its in the right channel. Dont worry tho your computer will tell you right away if you ****ed up with either LED lights or Beeping. |
