1917
Any one looking forward to seeing this movie. I think it's going to be ****ing good!!. :thumb:
|
Yeah. I'm hearing a lot of great things about it. Very interested.
|
Yep, will go C
|
Absolutely. Looks great
|
Seeing it at the AMC Dolby theater tomorrow. I am soooooooo freaking pumped.
|
Missed the showing the other night and wasted $5.00 on Star Wars part 9.
Looking forward to seeing this next week. |
I think I'll go see this on Saturday.
|
I can't believe this has been out for 103 years and I still haven't seen it.
|
Supposed to see this tomorrow
Between the early reviews, and the fact that WWI hasn’t had a major movie about it since maybe(?) Kubricks Paths of Glory... I’m expecting a wowzer |
Really looking forward to it.
They Shall Not Grow Old is a good recent documentary -- colorized original film and narrated by soldier's interviews. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IrabKK9Bhds" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I'm desperately hoping this film is good. The re-make of "Midway" was so bad I had to walk out on it. Dunkirk was barely good. Been a while since they made a good WWI/WWII movie.
|
Gonna try and see it tomorrow night. Really looking forward to it!
Sam Mendes is such a talented director and he edited 1917 to make it look like it was all done in one take. I can't wait to see how he pulled that off. |

Been playing Battlefield 1 for too long, hell yes I am in! I too have heard great things about this movie.

Just got out of the theatre. This movie deserves the praise that it’s getting. The way that it was shot in one shot continuously through long sections was really really impressive.
The story was good, the acting was good and the music was good. I might go see this one again I liked it that much. |

The last war movie I really liked (other than the documentary They Shall Not Grow Old) was Hacksaw Ridge. |
Not to derail the thread here, but you guys didn't like Midway? I get there was a lot of story to tell and only 2 hours to do it, but I thought they did a nice job there.

Oh shit - how could I forget about Midway? Yeah, I liked that a lot.
I think my brain sort of compartmentalizes sea based war movies and land based war movies. :D |
Fair enough. There are a few structural problems in telling THAT story, but I don't think I can get behind someone hating that movie.

Edit: Have not seen Midway, but the ads made the movie look bad. I'll give it a look if it comes to one of my streaming services. |

Just saw this today. It was really good. Cinematography was amazing.

Mendes knocked it out of the park with this one. Just a great film from start to finish and left me drained (it was intense as hell!)
Definitely see it on the biggest screen you can. |

For the sake of the movie, I think they did it right. You just have to roll with the “trust us. They’re psycho” and move on. |
This movie was like a hypnotic dream thanks to its cinematography. Just relentless and urgent pacing that didnt give me time to catch a breath. And I have never heard such a quiet theater at the end for being in a sold out movie. Would have been the best movie of 2019 had I seen it then

Going to the 12:30 show. Looking forward to it.

Saw it yesterday. Fascinating movie due to the filming technique of single-shot, which makes it (and the horrors of war) both more realistic and less intimate. Combined with a muted color palette and grainy appearance (which is also a debatable technique), it’s definitely a different experience and not for everyone, but works well here.
|
That was brilliant. Absolutely amazing. Best war movie I've seen in forever. I simply can't imagine how they pulled it off - with just a couple of pauses, the whole thing seemed like one continuous shot, although there's obviously no way it could be. And while I'm sure there was some very well done CGI involved, I'm pretty sure that mostly it was practical effects, which makes it even more impressive.
Go see it. If Mendes doesn't win best director for this they should just stop giving out awards. |

That scene with the flair illumination in the ruins was.... shit, I don't have the words. |
I just saw this today. Very impressive. The single shot was fascinating, and it really made the movie intense.

Yeah saw it today. It was ****ing fantastic. Just fan ****ing tastic.
They did a good job of not making it a total grinder so the impactful moments hit HARD. Also credit to them for not Cramming bullshit love stories or unnecessary dialogue in there. You got what you needed by using your ****ing brain, god forbid. They didn’t shy away from the horror of bodies everywhere because they couldn’t do anything with them in the trenches. I have no idea the validity of the story but there wasn’t any place where I was like “cut the shit”. That movie hits hard. HARD. That’s one that I’m going to have to wait to see again. ****ing phenomenal movie. Side note. If you haven’t listened to Hardcore History episodes on WWI. Do it. Don’t wait. |

People are so dumb. Clapping at a movie is like opening a can of SpaghettiOs and saying "My compliments to the chef." I'm gonna try to catch this one in the next couple of days. |

I normally go the AMC IMAX route but, am thinking about trying something different. |
Is the story actually good, or is it just CGI spectacle?

Saw it yesterday and totally agree with this. |

And it’s not a war movie in terms of big ass narrative story. Its an excellently filmed gripping trip on a single simple order that has to be delivered. Diametric opposite of say...Michael Bays Pearl Harbor |

I'm sure there's a lot more CGI than we can spot. They had to do something to make those impossibly long shots continuous. But there were really only a couple of places where it was obvious. And even then it wasn't bad.

Yeah. I wasn’t looking for it and none of that took me out of the movie.
I thought the filmography was a master class given how lazy some of the technology has made filmmakers. It’s amazing how fresh “the old way” looks. I’m not sitting here trying to be some high minded film guy. I get a lot of joy out of Marvel and Star Wars and I loved Midway. But this was different than that and did it very very well IMO. |

The “story” is that war sucks balls, and WW1 sucked some extremely big, brutal, unforgiving, physically torturing balls. Modern warfare is all clean missile shots and drone strikes. WW2 was hands-on but had a lot of long distance bombing and shelling. WW1 was one step above fighting with rocks and tree branches. |

I went into this really wanting to like it, but it was just mediocre. Some of the story was ridiculous.

I really enjoyed this movie. Lots of twists and turns with plenty of action.

This looks amazing. Hadn’t heard of it until now.

I rarely go to the theater, but today will be an exception. I'm gonna catch this one, then Underwater (which will most likely suck) and cap it off with a viewing of Unforgiven that's playing for one night only.

And yeah, milk. |

I think 1917 did a nice job of showing that proportionately. I posted about it earlier, but if anyone hasn’t done it, Dan Carlin’s hardcore history podcast on WWI is a must listen. I mean a must. |
