If you're looking for a capable budget 9mm with lots of options, don't overlook the PSA dagger. It's almost half the price of the Glock 19 G3 it's cloned from, and it accepts the majority of the same parts. Same mag as the Glock 19. The trigger is about the only part of the gun that gets any criticism. Many other parts are often considered better than the Glock. It comes in about 30 different models and configurations, including all kinds of options for threaded barrel, optics, lightweight receiver, etc. Check out the reviews for it. No shits given. I don't even own one. But a good friend does, and it was actually a really impressive gun to shoot. For a sub-$400 polymer strike fire, this is a really cheap combo with countless upgrades. The ability to part it out at every level intrigued me. Especially exchanging G19 parts all around.

They had a special on the compact one that was under 300 for the gun 10 magazines and a case once, that I almost did, because hell, it's under 300. I don't need it so I thought better, but goddamn they run some good deals on those.

Purchased a FN TAC3 AR last month. Have taken it out to the range a couple of times and absolutely love it.

Are you guys seeing any deals on AR's out there. (.223/.556) I'm thinking of picking up a bargain model, that's built half way decent. The old throw on the back of the ATV model, that I don't care if it gets banged up a little model. I know about all the name brands, but I'm a little fuzzy on the off brands, because I haven't been paying attention in class.

You can build your own with better parts and for cheaper generally, than getting some off the shelf gun. Built my own AR15 and AR10 and I definitely recommend it. It'll also help you get really familiar with your weapon.

If you do get some crappy cheap AR15, spend a little bit and get an upgraded trigger. You'll thank me later. Always been a huge fan of Geiselle triggers, like the SSA or SSA-E.

I haven't been paying attention to pricing for a while, but a few of my go-tos for decent quality ARs are Ruger, Windam Weaponry, and AeroPrecision Firearms. All are solid performers with better than average accuracy at a reasonable price. Ruger also has the best customer service/'warranty' in the business.

Windam was founded by the original owner of Bushmaster, before the quality went down when the new owners bought Bushmaster. Also very good customer service, iirc.

Aeroprecision was actually a military grade aircraft parts manufacturer before they got into firearms parts manufacturing, and have a reputation for high quality builds. I've bought parts from them and was always satisfied with them. But you can buy a completed rifle off their site if you don't want to 'build' one.

Not a bargain but I just purchased (last week) a Colt Socom M4A1 US Govt 5.56 Complete AR15 Lower Receiver and a Bravo Company complete upper with a 20" barrel. I am setting it up for 400 yard target plinking. I don't think I can push it out to 500 yards but will try. I have other AR's with shorter barrels.

I will probably pick up a couple of lowers this month as well. Our state government is fixing to outlaw the sale of scary black guns

I have a mostly stock first-gen Ruger SR-556E 18.5-inch barrel (Geissele SSA trigger) that I use to hunt prairie dogs with, and regularly shoot past 500 yards. Longest shot so far on a p-dog was just under 700 yards, but that I admit was mostly luck; I'm not really that good a rifleman. The rifle will shoot that far if a better shooter was behind it, imo. I had to build the correct ammo, but the thing will shoot less than 1/2 MOA. A Colt should do at least as well, given the right ammo, and a decent trigger.

If you just want a basic reliable decently accurate rifle for about $600, look at S&W's AR-15 Sport.

If I can plink at 700 yards with 556 I will be a happy plinker.

Ammo selection is a huge piece of the puzzle. With Rem white box that gun shoots just under 2 MOA at 200 yards. Proper ammo can cut that in half, or better. The aftermarket trigger just makes it easier to be consistent.

Ruger is kind of what I'm hedging toward in this case. I have some really nice AR's, but I don't want to knock the hell out of them going over boulder fields. I figure something like the Ruger, would be the ticket for a disposable, beat around gun.

If you're going to hike around with it, I wouldn't recommend the piston version. Too heavy. But Ruger makes a decent gun, no doubt. And the customer service is the best. Almost never had to use it, but they've always exceeded my expectations.

Looked it up in my notes; the shot was about 680 yards, constant approx. 10mph breeze from the left (I wrote mostly, so must've been a little swirl out there) no gusts, about 30 feet above me, 4 shots.

If i remember this one correctly, I had to walk the shots in (didn't yet understand turning clicks for elevation) so there was some 'Kentucky windage' involved.

Anyway, 500 yard shots at things like pie plate size shouldn't be that hard with the right ammo and trigger, but that's just my two cents.

You are going to want to find the heaviest pills that your rifle likes, those small rounds don’t move steel plates very well. So it’s hard to tell when you get hits.


That being said with my old MK12, I could hit steel to 750, then the rounds just became too hard to duplicate. Man size “elements” out to 650.

Lol, something like that. It was more about the quality of the barrel from Ruger, the trigger from Geissele, and all the work I put into building the right bullet. I just tried not to get in the way more than anything.

I will throw is Savage as a beater-class AR15 that's still a good dependable rifle. In the 600 to 800 range. They can be hard to find as they sell fast when in stock. But so is the Ruger and S&W in this day and age of shortage on everything.

The one Savage AR I shot was real nice. Very accurate even with factory ammo. IF I didn't already have 4 of the things, I was going to buy a Savage.

I just thought of another that seems always available in Acadamy Sports when I am out and around Century Arms seems like the AR15 is available on display The AK 47 copy is hit or miss if on display but it's a popular rifle the American-made AK's. I have no idea of the quality but they seem ok.

That's a very interesting round and much easier reload with it being non-belted. In my elk hunting days before my knees went south I'd probably traded my Remington 700 classic in 300 Weatherby mag just to turret load instead of one at a time.

Lol, I haven't kept track of 300 PRC ammo, but that sounds expensive.

And probably painful. These days i can comfortably shoot maybe 20 rounds out of my .30-06. Then my shoulder's had enough.

Would be fun though, for a minute. What do you plink at with a 300 PRC?

Ok, now that I have my beater trail gun, I'm looking at getting a beater trail scope. I'm looking for something that if I have a catastrophic incident, where it falls off the ATV and crashes into a boulder, I won't be sitting around pissed off for a week. I have some very nice scopes on some of my other AR's, but I don't need a $2400 ElcanDR, or anything like that. I also don't want the Walmart $39 super special, that's going to break after I cross my first boulder field with it. My gut instinct is to go with something around the $300 range, or less. I have a Burris Fullfield II 3-9X40. I think it's 6 years old ish. It's OK. I actually like it a lot. But if you have good ass scopes on your other AR's, you'll probably just be pissed off at it.

Just my opinion, on that kind of usage, I'd go with a red dot and magnifier, like a Romeo and Juliet setup. Maybe you want something a tier better than Sig's bottom level, but that's what I would go with.

I've been wanting to outfit one on an 10.5 or something for the sprayer/tractor, but I have trouble turning loose of the money these days.

I have the Burris set up on my Ruger AR-556, the Vortex Spitfire on my turkey shotgun and the Vortex Hoghunter on my AR-10. I've had good luck with all these including a couple more Burris Veracity's and of course Leupolds.

I met a guy at the range the other day who had created an excellent scope mount for his M1A. Said he'd make one for mine for $100, and I think I'll take him up on it. If I do that, I plan on switching my Leopold scope to that, and then getting an ACOG for the AR that it's currently mounted on. I currently have an old EOTech 512 mounted on my M1A, and with my old man eyes that just doesn't cut it.

Like many of the rest of my fellow old farts, I have, over the years, developed old man eyes. While my distance vision is certainly better than my close up vision, it has also significantly deteriorated. I broke out my scoped AR and took it to the range earlier, mainly because I hadn't shot it in years and just wanted to put some rounds through it. At a 25 yard indoor range, using a 4X scope, I found myself looking at a blurry little red dot in the middle of a blurry black circle. While I still had about a two inch group with a couple of three inch flyers, it certainly wasn't anything like I could do back in the days when I could actually see what I was ****ing shooting at. :banghead: At 25 yards with a scoped rifle I should be hitting a quarter-sized group.

I guess I could go to the eye doctor and ask for a different prescription for specific shooting glasses, but in the current political climate I'm kind of reluctant to do that. Does anybody know of any sort of shooting glasses that specifically address this problem? There's gotta be a market for it.

I've heard that green dots work much better for bad vision and astigmatism. Just over the last year or so, I've been developing astigmatism, and it ****ing sucks. My view of the red dot now has tiny red glare wings coming off both sides. Fortunately, it's symmetrical enough that I can still easily find the center dot. But getting old sucks.

I wasn't aware that there were shooting glasses that could reduce that..

very cool also pretty expensive that being said I would take a box or two....

They are indeed a bit pricey but I can't imagine milling them to perform so precisely is elementary.

But for the proposed effectiveness I'm willing to pay extra.

PSA is selling their Compact 9mm Dagger, plus 10 mags, threaded barrel, ands a case for 379.99

Was tempted to get one of those but decided to go with a Shadow Systems MR920 instead. PSA Dagger might be my next purchase though for a range toy I can tinker with.

I can't help myself, I'll buy any firearm that I feel is a good deal. (as long as funds allow)
